Anyway, thanks for all your comments and congratulations and that. To those unsure about the grade, when I bought it, I thought I was buying an 8, and on a (really) good day, maybe it would come back a 9. I never would have bought it if i didnt think it was definitely an 8 or higher, it was the most I'd ever spent on a card. Luckily for me, it was a really good day. As you guys can attest to im sure, sometimes you ride the bull, and sometimes the bull rides you.
Does anyone know of any recent sales of this card in PSA 9? I still haven't decided whether to sell or go for the set in PSA 8; I've already picked up a few commons. It would look pretty sweet all put together.
bs I have been working on the set for almost 2 yrs now - I pick up maybe 1 or 2 per month - I'm trying to keep the cost down, so I rarely get well centered cards since they usually go for right at SMR - I have picked up some but all and all, I get the nicely centered PSA 8s - meaning 60/40 or better for about 70% SMR.
I am happy with nicely centered key cards which are actually a bargain in OK centering.
There's a rash of PSA 8s with marginal centering and I don't mess with those at all.
Oh, and if you don't like rough cuts, you may have to ask since they don't always show up in the scan.
Good luck if you decide to do the set. I like the design and there's just enough stars to make it worth the time.
I set a bid to $700. Then i had to drive back home. Didnt put a snipe in. Got outbid. doh...
By the looks of the scan, that card could have been an 8. Even if its just a 7, it would easily have gone over 1K given that aaron johnston cookies rookies in top grades are ever hardly up for auction.
I have all of the key cards from the 63 fleer set raw. I would say that they will all grade out at 7 or better with my checklist, clemente, koufax and a few others all with solid shots at 8.
I have never sent in cards to PSA before and only bgs before. I have only sent in 1 order to BGS and after not getting any 9.5s on a lot of nice rcs from the past 10 years I didn't want to submit anymore. I will most likely be sending a PSA order to get graded sometime in the next 2 months but I think I might just send 5-10 cards and just play it safe to start.
I have been collecting for 15+ years and I have put together a very good size and diverse collection over the years. I have just heard so many horror stories with grading and since I am not a big time submitter I really don't want to be sending cards to PSA that have chances of being worth thousands. I know they deal with more expensive cards every single day but like I said, I'm new to this. Am I crazy for doing it this way and being over cautious, any other advice would be appreciated.
I agree that selling that 9 and turning it into a PSA 8 set is a great idea. There can be such a little difference between an 8 and a 9...if you find the right 8s of course. You also have to be willing to be satisfied having an 8 checklist instead of a 9 in your collection. For me, that wouldnt be a bad thing at all! Congrats on a superb card!
