Why are the Yankees leading off on Sportscenter/ESPNEWS?

I'm not a hardcore baseball fan, but why would the Yankees win be the top story? There not leading the division or the wild card race, so what gives? That's the biggest story of the day?

How about the A's winning streak? Or Leo Mazilli getting fired? Or how about the Red Sox winning to maintain their lead? You get the picture.

Why would a team winning a game to avoid being swept the lead story???

This should be a stop story tonight. More discontent in the clubhouse.

Gary Sheffield insinuated that Derek Jeter and A-Rod are not the leaders of the Yankees.
He never mentions them by name in an explosive story set to run on Monday, and he doesn't say many nice things about his team. ''I ain't going to say who it is (leaders), but I know who it is. I know who the team feeds off. I know who the opposing team comes in knowing they have to defend to stop the Yankees.'' He also accused the media of portraying the two superstars ''in a positive light and everyone else is garbage.'' He also said some things about family, that are sure to fire George Steinbrenner up. ''It's not a family-oriented team. In L.A., wives can fly on the plane; with the Yankees they can't,'' the former Dodger said. ''With other teams, the wives always have functions to bring them together. Not here.'' He also said he doesn't have to ''speak to anyone in the organization to still do my job.''' After this, he probably doesn't have to worry about that. Rotoworld

Sheffield has always been a bad clubhouse guy. Wherever he's been, this is common. Not surprised to read that, but I am surprised to read that he thinks he is the guy who the team "feeds off". Which means, the team with the $200 million dollar payroll that is currently just trying to stay alive for a possible wild card with pitchers obtained from the scrap heaps of the other MLB teams, is feeding off of him. Nice job, Gary - keep it up!

Why they are leading off SportsCenter is anyone's guess. And, please test Giambi right away.

Sheffield must hate not being the biggest fish in the pond, like he was elsewhere.

If he wasn't batting in front of the best player in the AL, does anyone think he'd still be putting up the numbers he is the past couple of years? He's a malcontent, and a whiner. Jeter is NY's baby, and Arod is, well, Arod. His precious ego can't handle being down on the totem pole?

    What a big baby.

    Remember these Chuck Norris Facts

    1. When Chuck Norris does a pushup, he isn't lifting himself up, he's pushing the Earth down
    2. According to Einstein's theory of relativity, Chuck Norris can actually roundhouse kick you yesterday
    3. There are no such things as lesbians, just women who have not yet met Chuck Norris

The more I read, the more it sounds like he's unhappy because he's not the focus of attention.

He complains that Jeter and Arod get so much attention, and everyone else is, as he says, 'garbage'. Huh? How many players have the media forced down the throats of the American sports public? It's a ridiculous claim to say that the media only cares about Jeter and Arod.

He says, "I'm used to having six chairs around me, but here if there are six chairs, then there's going to be 20 reporters.'' So you're mad because people aren't sitting around you, kissing up to you, making you feel like a hero?

Then him bringing out the race card? Real classy Sheff. If he's that unhappy, if it's such a bad atmosphere, why did he push for a contract extension?

  • Those of us in the Midwest take ESPN with a grain of salt......ever since the mid 90's they've been a slave to the NY audience. Jeter couldn't fa*t in the clubhouse without it being on ESPN!

If I were a White Sox, Cardinals, or Angels fan, I'd be even more pi**ed that the Yanks get all the ESPN press....if you care about that thing.

But hey, gotta pay the bills!
