KnucklesKnuckles Posts: 2,512 ✭✭✭
Man am I ever happy.. Thank you Gary Bettman for being such a hard a**.

Not only did we aquire the huge talent of Pronger which would have never happend before the new CBA but we still have enough money left over for another superstar. As soon as Oiler tickets go on sale I'll be right there buying.

WoooHOO!

Yeah, nice pick-up, we let Hatcher go and McCarty. Though we did re-sign Yzerman for one year, see what he has left? I heard that we are going to get Osgood back not that he has been let go. This in going to be one wierd hockey season.

Another reason I won't be watching the Blues this year. We lost Demitra too, appearantly we're going for a youth movement.

I always stated that the Blues were one of the best run organizations in the NHL. WTF happened?

Anyway, no more NHL more me. Too many other things to preoccupy my life. Also, consider that fact that my home team is the Blackhawks, and ...oh well, nevermind.

For you NHL fans, congrats on getting your sport back.

The owner is trying to sell to team so he doesn't want to put much money into it, plus Pronger was going to kill them in cap room. I do want to watch at least one hockey game this year that ends a shoot out, besides that I won't be watching much.

I don't blame you. The Oilers have been doing the 'youth movement' for more than 10 years now with no success.. granted we didn't have much of a choice with the lack of funds to pay star veterans..

The cap was inevitably necessary to salvage the league, but it's unfortunate to see many teams have to release cornerstones of their team. I am glad to see Pronger move on (Wings fan here image ), but was unhappy to see someone like McCarty go so I understand the frustration.

  • Coming from Cleve, I can give you a tip on future....small market owners will crawl into their shells and try to make money to make up for last years losses??/gains - by not losing??? for the next few years until salaries reduce in the perception arena as well as the reality. It will take that long for fans and players to really adjust.

Our Tribe went from $80mil to $40mil with the switch from Jacobs and promptly went from ALCS to who knows where...but Dolan may be making money.

Big difference is the media contracts that hockey doesn't have. That equals more pressure to downsize.

I hope it all works out....let's go back to six teams and see some real hockey again.image

I'm a die hard wings fan too, I was reallky chocked that they let McCarty go. At least my home town Flames got him.
  • Mega- Im with you. Although they signed a good free agent today and may be on the verge of a good goalie, Im just not excited about the Blackhawks or hockey.

Also....and I cant believe this......but after looking at the Blackhawks schedule they do not play the Bruins, Canadiens or Maple Leafs AT ALL this year and only play the Rangers once. Thats ridiculous. How many people want to see them play Columbus a million times?

Honestly, I like Pronger's skills - a lot - and I was probably the only person in St. Louis who was happy when we traded Shanahan to get him, but the team was never going to win with him here. His playoff performances have been disappointing and he's not a very good captain. I would've rather seen Tkachuk go, but I really hope the team just starts fresh and cuts everybody loose.

Ahhh I love all this hockey talk! image

Hey you guys (St. Louis) signed Trent Whitfield, Jeff Hoggan and Ryan Ramsay.

The Bruins signed Glenn Murray, Shawn McEachern, Dave Scratchard, Brad Isbister and (drum roll please) Brian Leetch.

They've tended offers to Mike Modano and a couple of their own stars Joe Thornton and Sergei Samsonov.

They did lose Sergei Gonchar to the Penguins today.

I think I'm buying some tix soon.

Anyone know if Forsberg signed with someone yet. I'd love to see him wearing the spoked B. I think he's probably the best two way forward in the game.

I can't believe they let Darren McCarty go. He was my favorite Wing for the last 10 years, and a tough as nails guy during the three Cup runs

Holy crap.. now Edmonton got Peca! I've always liked him, he works his a** off.. a reall gritty player who gets the job done. Now we have 3 captains. image Lets see if they can get a good goalie now.

Seeing all of these players move will certainly generate interest in the upcoming season, especially for the teams who once lacked the star power but have now been able to sign one or two. Kariya with the Preds, Khabi with the Hawks, etc... It also gives some of these teams credibility and may make the season one of the most competitive we have seen in some time. As a Wings fan, it was always nice to see my team sign the big names year after year, but this will certainly help keep the ice from tilting too far in one direction and that's what the league needs to have happen to get new fans watching in areas where their hockey teams have not been traditionally strong.

Pronger's agent confirms he wants a trade out of Edmonton. Pat Morris (prongers agent) told TSN a trade request has now been made on behalf of his client.

    Time to vent....

What a slap in the face to Edmonton and the Oilers.. Not just two superstar players (peca, samsonov) but Pronger as well to make it three want to go else where due to family life.. Pronger will replace Comrie as the most hated ex-Oiler of all time. Rexall will literally shake with boo's when he steps onto the ice for the first time wearing a different jersey.

The incredible atmosphere at Rexall, going all the way to just a single game to win the cup, being the big hero, fans worshiping you, and the big money are nice and all but not enough to make them actually have to live in Edmonton eight months out of the year right? Will any star want to live and play in Edmonton after this? I hope Rafi leaves the ice with some incredible speed to knock his frig'n head off when we play against him next season. This just makes you love the likes of Ryan Smyth even more.

Pronger's wife was born and raised in St. Louis.. he was there for 9 years.. he had two kids there.. they're unhappy and home sick.. wife not happy = pronger not happy. Who knows to what extent the toll takes.. maybe the wife threatened divorce.

Peca wanting out? Exact same reason.. New York or at least to play somewhere on the east coast to be closer to the wife and family..

Samsonov? Exact same reason again.. His family is in Detroit - playing on the East coast would be preferred to make family life better.

In short these guys are whipped and should grow a pair to tell their little princesses to suck it up and move to where they're playing and like it. If a Joe Schmoe working for say Coca-Cola got transferred from one city to another his wife and kids would be going with him and it would be a lot harder on him I'm sure compared to the millionaire hockey player who can afford to buy another house with new furnishings at the drop of the hat without having to sell the old house.. etc..

It makes me sick. In the old school days if someone like Sawchuk the greatest goaltender at the time (and of all time imo) had a contract for 5 years and pulled this crap he wouldn't be in the NHL period probably.

This sucks, but I'm excited to see who we'll get in return for Pronger. Kevin Lowe won't give him away. I guess I'm just old school in my way of thinking that a contract is like a handshake and one should honor what he had agreed too.

Don't be silly. If you had a chance to make 7 million a year in city you liked, or 7 million in a city you didn't like, which would you pick?

The fact that these three players don't like your city doesn't mean they're 'whipped'.

Yes it does. He had his best season in years here. All three have said that they like it here very much but their wives do not (I would guess because we don't have stores like Gucci here etc..)

I hope to see Pronger in a Blackhawks jersey. The bottom of the barrel where players careers dwindle. Hey it's only a 5 hours drive away from St. Louis! Who cares about hubby wifey likes it!

  • Boopotts I agree 100% with Knuckles. If you make ridiculous money and get to live the life of luxury you go where they tell you to go--stop whining and move wherever the hell you want AFTER you play out your career. If I were Kevin Lowe I'd tell these guys exactly what I thought of them and that is this--"you are playing in the city of Champions (and I'm a Habs fan), you are part of one of the great professional hockey organizations that have ever hit the ice, a team that's been around for 25 years and have won 5 Cups! If you really want to go I'll move you, but you'll play where I get the best deal from, that means if it's Vancouver so be it, and you can talk it over with their management. As well, your wives are no longer welcome in this building, security will be escorting them out if they try to come in--wenches!"
I mean I love my wife, would do anything for her, but she's not my boss. Christ the money Pronger makes he could rent a lear jet every year and fly her back and forth to St. Louis at the drop of a hat and it would be like renting a limo for most of us.

Well, what do you want him to say? 'I think this city hums nuts and I want out as soon as possible'? Maybe his wife hates it, maybe he hates it, but one thing is clear; no matter what the real answer is he's NOT going to say anything other than what he said; i.e., he's not going to tell the people of Edmonton that he thinks their city blows and he wants to beat an exit ASAP.

If you're one of the top five hockey defensemen in the world you have a lot of say in where you play. And that fact is that ALL of us would love the opportunity to have a big say in what city we work in. The fact that elite athletes have this opportunity is no reason to begrudge them.

I live in Detroit, and guys leave here (or are simply unwilling to come here) all the time. It's just something you have to accept if you live somewhere that isn't considered a desireable locale by most other people.

Again, just more silliiness. Let's say you were making $5,000,000 a year, and you were living in a city that your wife hated. Then you're presented with an opportunity to move to a city that both you AND your wife liked, and you would keep the same salary. Would you do it?

Not certain about Peca but Samsonov should not be included in the discussion. He is a free agent, free to go wherever he so chooses. The Oilers knew that when they acquired him from the Bruins for the usual Bruin acquisition - nothing. I really hope the B's re-sign Sammy. He liked it in Boston and never should have left.

Let us not forget that the only reason that Pronger was traded from Hartford originally was because Brendan Shanahan had to be moved by Mike Keenan because of personal reasons.

  • But Boopotts we don't even know if he'll get to go to a city that he or his wife likes more, he just said he wants out of Edmonton! Do you think he'd like getting moved to the backwoods of Nascar Country, Carolina? NO, he and his wife want to play in New York probably. I'm with Knuckles, I hope he gets traded to the BlackHawks and he and his wife rot there!

Pronger's agent said he won't play in Canada period. I have this burning feeling that we'll end up trading him to Philly for Gagne + whatever. I would be pretty happy about that as long as Gagne would be happy about it. Maybe Lowe should not only talk to the agent and player but the wife as well to make sure Edmonton would be ok long term.. image

What has Pronger said? Did he say that if he wasn't traded he just flat out wasn't going to play this year? I have a hard time believing that he'd forsake however-many millions of dollars just so he didn't have to play in Edmonton.

Anyway, maybe that's what he said. I haven't kept up with it. But my guess is that he requested a trade, which is something 100's of pro athletes do every year. Maybe he told Lowe that he didn't intend to resign with the team when his contract was up, and that if the Oilers wanted to get something for him they better do it now. Or maybe he just told them that he would like a trade, and asked management if they would honor his wishes.

If my assumption is correct- namely that he isn't threatening to sit out the year if he isn't traded-- then you would be hard pressed to construct an argument that paints Pronger as a welsher or a traitor. Athletes, just like the rest of us, sometimes want a change of scenery for whatever reason. Forsberg and Lidstrom threaten every two weeks to return to Sweden, as aro said Shanahan very explicitly stated that he wanted out of St. Louis... This kind of stuff happens all the time. It's a bummer if you're an Oilers fan, but that alone doesn't make any of the parties involved bad guys.

In 5 years from now I doubt Lowe could care less if he resigned with the Oilers or not.. at 40 he would be close to done. So I doub that. I'm not going to back and fourth with you about this any longer..

Well, like I said-- I doubt he would just sit out the season if he wasn't traded. He probably requested a trade-- which is his perogative, I don't see how you can argue that-- and Lowe will probably do what he can to accomodate him as a professional courtesy.

Manny Ramirez wants out of Boston, Ron Artest wants out of Indiana, Mike Sweeney wants out of Kansas City... Guys want to move on to different situations for all kinds of different reasons. Don't see how you can begrudge a guy that.

Re: The Gagne angle: I don't see how they can do anything but get a blueliner in return. Another forward who can skate? Edmonton already has plenty of guys who can haul ass down the ice and handle the stick. But what kind of blueline would they have without Pronger? I don't know, maybe they try to work something out with Columbus for Adam Foote? Pronger clearly isn't concerned with playing for a winner (if he wants to leave the 2nd best team in the NHL), and Foote seems like the kind of gamer who would fit in well up in Northern Alberta. I don't know-- just a thought. I'm sure they'll get plenty in return for him, and if you think about it this may turn out to be a real blessing for you guys, since as you said he's not getting any younger and his stock will never be any higher than it is right now.

They shouldn't have signed the contract to begin with.. yeah things change but you suck it up and don't go back on your word. Your not going to change my opinion on that I'm not going to change yours.. enough.

<< <i>Edmonton already has plenty of guys who can haul ass down the ice and handle the stick. >>

We needed a player that would shoot the puck before when we had Peca, Samsonov and Pronger now we'll be needing one even more so. Gagne would be perfect and Clarke likes the big guys. Who knows maybe Lowe could steal Nittymaki away as well. We don't have a #1 goaltender signed.
A UFA defensemen or two can be signed. There's quite a few out there, we don't necessarily have to trade Pronger for one.

  • Pronger leaving is fine, but if thats what paved the way for Peca and Samsonov to come up with the same lame excuse to leave than thats another story. Pronger looked slow and listless in the finals and was on the receiving end of more hits than he could have given. I dont buy into the amount of minutes played as taking a toll either. He just looked like an easy target to skate around. Let him go and replace him with someone that wants to play.....

Sorry, but requesting a trade is not the same as refusing to play (which WOULD be the same as going back on your word). And it's not a very subtle distinction between the two, which is why it surprises me that you don't see it.

Anyway, best of luck in 2006. Hope you get a good player in return.

I agree with Boopots on this. Although, as a Canadian, it doesn't make me hate Pronger any less image

Actually, even when I was cheering for Edmonton in the finals, I couldn't bring myself to cheer for Pronger. Not after his performance at the Olympics.

While he's at it he may as well play for Team USA instead of his home country like Hull did.

Yeah, and when Shanny wanted to get traded at least it was because he REALLY hated Hartford -- not because some nagging wife was making him do it (he was single at the time)! image

LOL. So Chris Pronger would rather live in the States. What's so bad about that? I'd rather live in Canada, FWIW, but I don't think it would be fair for my fellow countrymen to villify me for that.

Like you said, different strokes for different folks.image

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)
  • Pronger wanted out because he got busted cheating on his wife. That is the real reason he wanted out.

    Anyways, he is gone image

I had heard it had something to do with his wife. It sounds as if he was doing something withOUT his wife.

This whole trade scenario is hardly his wife's fault from everything I've heard.
