of course if you take inflation into account, i might of spent more on certain coins back in the '80s, & in terms of % of income, i spent WAY more in the late 1970s
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows. I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

$4500 for a cleaned and retoned AU 1872-CC dime. In the end it made ANACS Net EF40 and was sold for $6000.

Replacement coin for my registry set 1922-D Lincoln Cent at NGC. Was a 1922-D PCGS Weak D that PCGS wouldn't allow on there registry as it was a Weak D and not a regular 1922-D. Sold the Weak-D for 5K and purchased a regular 1922-D PCGS MS-64 RED Lincoln for the set $625.00. Had also sold my 1909 VDB MS-65 Brown (MY ICON coin FULL BLUE OBVERSE) at the Heritage Sale in St Louis MO in June for $300 and bought a 1909 VDB MS-66 RED for $160. Isn't coin collecting FUNreally enjoyed upgrading.
Enjoying time at home with the family now is my full time passion.
I'll have to amend my last post (long day on the truck) didn't read the post close enough. $104.00 for a replacement for the 1922-D Weak D just a couple of weeks ago. Bought a full red example is in for grading at this time hoping for another winner. This coin will be a keeper though.

$450 for a raw 1916-S Saint on ebay (yikes!). I was a foolish beginner and probably wouldn't do it again. Luckily it was genuine and now resides in PCGS plastic graded AU50. So I did OK afterall.

I think we have a winner!
Edited to add...I would still pay just as much for a raw coin as I would for the same coin in a slab.
