Maddux goes for 3000 Ks tonight!

Not sure if there are any maddux fans out there but tonight he goes for 3000 Ks! Well I know maddux is towards the end of his career and his ERA has been getting worse the last few years, but he has had a pretty tremendous career. I don't think we will ever see another pitcher get 15+ wins a season for 17 years in a row(not sure if he will make it 18 this year but will see!) I was lucky enough to watch his 300th win against my hometown giants last year. Hopefully he will get 3000 Ks tonight against the giants too!(I'm also a giants fan but when maddux pitches against my giants, I become a cubs fan for that one game!)

That's pretty amazing, seeing as how he was never at any point a power pitcher.

Likely one of the most underrated pitchers of this generation.

wow i didn't realise that either, i hardly would call him underated he was one of the most dominate pitcher in the NL for at least 15 years or better. last few years though, as he winds down, others have been better. he can field his pos too.

1st ballot HOF in my opinion.

longevity allows him to compile some milestones.

    Good for you.
  • Yeh I guess he kind of sneaks up on these milestones. If you compare the publicity of clemens approaching 300 versus maddux winnings his 300th, there was no comparison. I think maddux would have wanted it that way though. Always very humble and trying not to take the spotlight. I am also a clemens fan too. Very impressive year thus far. Doesn't seem like he has lost much towards the end of his career.

Well, Clemens did have a bigger stage in Yankee stadium when he won this 300th. Achieving his 4000th K in the same game also brings a bit more notice as well.

Unlike Palmiero, Maddux truly did dominate.

4 consecutive cy young awards, (palmiero didn't win a single MVP), 8 time all star (raffy has 3 in 18 years? sad), 14 gold gloves (13 of those in a row), led the league in ERA 4 times, wins 3 times, and shutouts five times (raffy failed to ever lead the league in HR, BA, or RBI).

They will both go into the hall. But unlike Raffy, Maddux DOMINATED the sport.

One does not need to dominate to enter the HOF.

edited to add: all one needs is 75% of the vote.

I wonder how a guy could be labeled "UNDERRATED one moment and then truly dominate" the next.

can you be UNDERRATED and dominate at the same time?

I suppose you could, but that logic baffles me.

When people think of the great pitchers of this era, I doubt that Maddux is thought of.

He's a quiet guy, never got into trouble, did his job, and truly did dominate for a 4 year stretch.

Yes you can dominate and be underrated.

Does the name Tom Brady ring a bell?

I guess not going back and forth was BS. huh?

    AX
My comment about Maddux deserving the HOF (like Palmiero) was not intended for anyone specific, but for the the mass audience in general, yet YOU had to AGAIN throw out how Palmiero was not DOMINANT. My post NEVER implied that he was. My implication was that he was a true pro like Maduxx, I think it is best you keep your word to the community.

    Good for you.
  • I can remember when the Cubs would use Maddux as a pinch hitter and pinch runner. Im thinking the Braves might have used him the same way for a while. Great ballplayer. Should have spent his entire career with Chicago, but I would think his stats would not have been as good had he stayed. Either way, great career.

Keith i never knew that, i knew that glavine had been used like that and Drysdale in years past. i wonder what other pitchers have been used for pinch hitting? Anyone know of any others?

    Steve

I presume Babe Ruth to be one.
    Good for you.
  • I believe Mike Hampton was used as a pinch hitter too. That boy has some power for a pitcher. Yeh I do believe maddux was pinch hitting/running for the braves. I became a big fan of maddux because the most televised team for me was the braves on TBS so I grew up watching the braves with dale murphy struggle...then they became dominant with pitchers like maddux, glavine, smoltz, and who could forget about good ole john rocker.

  • I remember watching the Cubs use Fergie Jenkins as a pinch hitter (he hit 13 homers, I think 6 in one season) and I remember them also using Rick Reuschel as a pinch hitter AND pinch runner. Despite his size, he could really move (at least when the Cubs first brought him up).

Rick Ankiel was used a few times, and now the Cardinals use Jason Marquis. He's batting .353 so there's no reason not to.
  • wasn't rick reuschel's nickname "big daddy" or something like that? I remember him pitching for the giants many moons ago.

  • donnster - That was his nickname. He had a rather unusual body shape...not really fat, but just big and almost pear shaped. But he was extremely athletic and a very good pitcher for over 15 years.
  • After Babe Ruth, the single biggest mistake in the history of baseball, in terms of trading or letting a player walk via free agency, was the the Cubs letting Maddux go!

I am surprised at how I've seen some posts as Maddux as underrated etc...? Yeah, he may have gone unnoticed in the deacade of the 2000's, but in the 90's nobody was better. He had an incredible run of ERA and Walks/Hits per nine innings.
  • Interestingly, the Cubs GM that let Maddux go (Larry Himes, the worst GM in the last 50 years), was also the GM that traded for Sammy Sosa. So he lost a few Cy Young's and a couple of hundred pitching wins for being too tight, but obtained almost 550 homers for nothing. I guess you make some mistakes, and make some gems. I think he was fired that same year. (He wasnt the GM that let Raffy and his 500+ homers go though).
