He hasn't "bought" anything, sure he has been the winning bidder on some high buck stuff, put none of it has been paid for yet. It looks like a hijacked account. The guy goes from bidding on run of the mill items and then all of the sudden starts bidding like crazy on the high buck stuff? Nope? It doesn't smell right
Bob - Yea I thought maybe someone had PM'd the street address to you. Without that, walking into the police barracks to check him out may not do much good - but it couldn't hurt. I agree with your very plausible scenario about this guy.
The account was an underbidder on one of my recent auctions. While it was running, I got a "How much to sell this card please let me know thank you" email from the ID. As you guys have found out, the ID seemes to have registered address in Cranston RI. I didn't get an email address from the person though, and since they weren't the winning bidder (thankfully), I didn't get any other contact info.
I just asked the seller the following question thru Ebay. Let's see if he replies.
Question from Bob C. Item: 01 2001 Sp Authentic Babe Ruth Jersey/Cut Auto PSA (5222850686) This message was sent while the listing was active. Bob C. is a potential buyer. --------------------------------------- Hi, Great cards you have listed. If I bid to win the Ruth jersey/cut auto or a few of your other items can I pick them up tomorrow. You are in Cranston, R.I. as your contact info states. I am very close by and would bring cash. PLMK soon as there are only about 14 hrs. left. Thanks, Bob C.
I know I'm new here guy but this scammer upset me. I did a little investigating of my own and came up with previous addresses for this name. it previously seems he had 2 addresses in San Diego, 1 in Bonner Springs,KS , 4 in cranston, 2 in providence , and 5 in Warwick, RI. I hope this info helps w/the state boys. You guys do a great job--Keep it up.
Yes! Our fraud reports did accomplish something. eBay killed the auctions and sent this notice to bidders:
Our records show that you placed a bid on this item. We removed this item from the Site and cancelled your bid because it appears that the seller's account has been compromised and used by an unauthorized third party. The seller's privileges to trade on eBay may be temporarily suspended while we investigate this matter further. Due to privacy concerns we will not be able to share further details related to this seller.
If someone claiming to be the seller asks you to complete a transaction outside of eBay, we strongly recommend that you ignore the request. Transactions for items listed on eBay that are completed outside of the eBay marketplace are not covered by the Buyer Protection services offered by eBay and can be highly indicative of fraud.
The hijack theory sounds odd, since the account was advertising this blitz while it was still selling cheap junk. But at least eBay agreed that it was very fishy and pulled the plug while it investigates. What we did WORKED ... something that talking sternly to him over the phone would not have accomplished (even if he had provided a real number).

If you have already paid, you may wish to pursue recuperating your funds. Some steps you might take include:
1. Ask the seller for a refund 2. If you paid by check, ask your bank to stop payment 3. If you paid by credit card, contact your credit card company's security department 4. If you have made a payment by money order or wire transfer, you may contact that company for further information at 1-800-325-6000 (Western Union), or at 1-800-926-9400 (Money Gram) 5. It does seem odd and I had never seen a hijacked ebay account with a seller buying pattern such as that...not even close. However we must realize that ebay scammers/hijackers are going to constantly be coming up with new kinds of criminal ebay tactics to steal people's money.
I have a "ton of A list material" from 50's (childhood anal collector) that I am just now starting to grade and since my wife has terminal Ebayitis I may try to sell a few of my doubles, etc. on her site. Am I going to have problems getting the "pros" to bid since she has no Ebay history for cards and these will be quite valuable cards?? If so what avenue should I take for maximum return...
ADVICE....Wise men don't need it and fools don't heed it
Expensive vintage cards from a seller with no history of selling such will smell like a scam to most bidders and thus, in your case, result in some big bargains for those who took the gamble. I sometimes buy cards from shaky sources on eBay, but it is a calculated risk and I cap my bids accordingly.
You would be better off to sell through one of the eBay auction services or an established seller of valuable cards. Even after their commission, your bottom line likely would be better than if you suddenly listed a bunch of expensive cards from an account with a history of totally unrelated sales. To cynical, wary eBay shoppers like me, it would look like a hijacked account.
lol, i just got an email a few minutes ago from ebay in response to my email alerting them of this fraud. they said they couldn't help since he doesn't have any items for sale...
to which i replied, no way... that's great... we've landed on the moon!
