Have you ever seen Ronnie take steroids? The man is a genetic freak and works harder than anyone. He won his first six titles while working full time as a Arlington police officer. Do you think that by taking steroids anyone can become Mr. Olympia? HE can last longer riding a bike than Lance could in a gym. What would happen to Lance if he tried a 500 pond bench press, A 900 lb deadlift, a 800 lb squat or 1500 lbs on the leg press it would be a awfull sight.
What about this guy. He'd probably be competitive at all the sports mentioned in this thread.
David Beckham, who turns 30 on Monday, is entering the final stages of a career that has brought him virtually every trophy at club level but only the captain's armband to show for his years with England.
Ten years ago the midfielder made his Manchester United league debut as a gangly teenager from east London.
Nowadays he plays for Real Madrid, the club with the most successful pedigree in European football, enjoys celebrity status over two continents and has a personal fortune estimated by the Sunday Times at 65 million pounds ($123.8 million).

I would like to see Coleman try riding up the Pyranees mountains...try riding ONE mile up those 60% grades, let alone the 150 that stage does. Now THAT would be an awful sight.
No, not ANYONE can stake steroids and become mr olympia. But if you think people get that big naturally, well, I don't know what to tell you. And then you say he was working full time while training? And that doesn't scream out steroids/growth hormones to you?
Why don't you look at the competitions for clean weight lifters, where drug testing is administered, and see how much smaller they are than mr olympia guys? And then try to tell me it's natural.
I think you are too caught up in not respecting cycling as an incredible athletic even, and more inspired who lifts for 30 seconds.

so far everybody that has been named, Fedor Emelianenko would kick all of their asses.. no contest..
Cyclists are great. They rule all others. You are right Axtell, we are all just jealous of their insane ability and athletic prowess. Americans are stupid for not loving cycling and appreciating the skill of these 150 pound warriors! I think you misspelled Pyrenees BTW which is surprising coming from Lance's number one fan And yes, I would likely bet on Tiger if Lance and he competed against each other in 20 events. I would absolutely bet on Randy Moss or any other NFL skill player.
I think you are 100% right Steve. Still, I never said Lance Armstrong did not domnate his sport. I just don't think he is the most dominant athlete. Of course, I was likely defining that term more strictly than others.

No, I never said Americans were 'stupid' for not appreciating cycling. My point is obviously not lost on you, as it's apparent that a majority of Americans who overlook marginal sports like cycling, rugby, the like would never consider those athletes to be the finest in the world as they aren't in the public spotlight like american sports like football or baseball.
Oh the horror, I misspelled a mountain range in Europe...that makes all my points invalid then, right? And no, I am not Lance's 'number one fan', but I have no problem admitting that he is without a doubt (in my mind) the finest athlete in the world today, and perhaps of all time. The only other name of all-time athletes I can come up with quickly is Jim Thorpe.
You would bet on Tiger over Lance if say they competed in a marathon? What about any type of endurance activity? You really think that, as good as shape as Tiger is in, that Lance isn't in even better shape?
Heck, as long as this doesn't have anything to do with sports cards anyway.....
The most dominant athlete? Clearly it's Ronald McDonald - he has to "RUN" around the world representing the one of the largest fast food franchises in the world. The tireless events, all that endurance it takes, not to mention pumping all those Big Macs!
He is one of the most recognized individuals in the free and not so free world. Heck, even people in Iraq want Big Macs! Just on flat bread.
So, here's my tribute to Ronnie! May you reign supreme!
How many, out of the athletes named so far, have beaten cancer and still dominates?
And to top that off, Armstrong has won the tour 7 straight times while competeing in a country that basically hates Americans. I'm sure some peolpe respect him over there but I'd also bet he has rec'd his share of anti-American sentiments.
Now, since he has decided to retires on top, someone else can have a chance. Up until now, they only had the thought of coming in second. To be a world class cyclist and know that you don't even have a chance against one person..........now that's domination!
I'm not even a cycling fan, but I respect this guy more than any other athlete in any other sport.

Ronnie has won 7 straight Mr. Olympia's and Lance Armstrong has won 7 straight Tour De France titles. They are tied for dominating their sports. If Ronnie wins his eight title in October he will have dominated his sport longer than anyone else.
Lance just took over a "superpower" with with one ball tied behind his back. You can't even compare what Tiger and sissy Moss do with what this guy does! Walking 18 holes does not compare to biking 18 miles up the side of a mountain! Moss is huffing a puffing and quiting on pass patterns after 5 plays! If Lance took off half as many plays as Moss does, he would get passed by half the field!!!
There is no 19th hole waiting for you with air conditioning and wine and showers. Lance goes to France where they freaking hate him and throw stuff at him and hopes he falls, then he sleeps in a tent somewhere up the side of mountain an then wakes up at 5 and bikes down the others side before going up another mountain and maybe just maybe, a cold mountain dew will be waiting for him at the finish line.
I don't doubt that Tiger is a great human specimen, but the dude would be screaming mommy after half a mile in the alps.
Poeple don't like Lance because he is a skinny white guy and that isn't supposed to be dominating. Its like guys who hate Bird, or Ruth cause he was fat. They won't admit that they were all dominate. Now you try football, baseball, golf or cycling up the side of mountain....which one you think you would suck at..
BAM
Lance owns France, yeah he is white and has one ball, but there isn't an athlete on the planet who could do what he has done!
What Lance did is off the chart and I don't like discussing this - just because of the ire it provokes.
I hope no one was upset with me choosing Ronnie!
But for the sake of argument - the question is dominance WITHIN, their sport - since you really can't compare apples with bananas.
So in that sense, some people dominate their sport with such frequency, how can we really say? Unless we want to go back to the original concept of what a sport is? Does it involve brute force? Profuse sweating? Losing a kidney?
If so, I could probably find a sport where a guy has weight lifted and won more titles than anyone last year.
This has to do with media attention to a degree also.
But having said that - the odds of winning 7 straight "tours" is off the chart.
But for the sake of argument - the question is dominance WITHIN, their sport - since you really can't compare apples with bananas.
This makes a difference to me then. It is hard for me to argue against Lance given this parameter. I think I tried to make this point a ways back to no avail though. Oh well.
Lance has dominated the Tour in a way that no one else has dominated their sport since the Celtics in the '60s. Though Jordan's Bulls would probably be the same. However, he does not really dominate cycling. He doesn't win or really try to win other large stage races during the year. In the past he has rode in support of other team members in several of those races.
For Tiger to equal this kind of dominance in a event, he'd need to with a specific Major seven times. Lance basically has gone "all in" for the tour for the last seven years and pulled it off each time.
<< <i>For Tiger to equal this kind of dominance in a event, he'd need to with a specific Major seven times. >>
Well, I disagree. Isn't the Tour de France in reality a series of races and the winner is the best overall time? In theory, someone could never finish higher than 2nd in any race and win the event. Perhaps I misunderstand the rules. If there were some "total shots" stat for golf for 20 events, that would be comparable to the Tour de France, IMO. I say Tiger.

<< <i>. Lance could never get through a Coleman workout. >>
And Coleman couldn't get through one stage of the tour de france, let alone winning 7 of them in a row.
What's your point? That a juiced up steroid guy is a better athlete than Armstrong?
And if he wants, there's plenty of bike messenger jobs in NYC when he retires.

talk about being in shape
as usual it (like all others) went off on 100 different tangents)
my take and It is only my opinion is that lance armstrong and woods are the 2 most dominating sports figures today.
that is if the word dominating encompasses the sport in which they play only. not what they would do in other sporting events.
