Anyone watch "Mantle" tonight on HBO?

I found it very enjoyable. If you missed it tonight, there is no need to worry. It will be replayed quite often in the next week

I caught it last night. Very good show, I never knew how fast he was until watching that. I knew he had decent speed but not like that.

Someone once stated that he was faster down the line than Ichiro is now.

Not to be a homer but I find that incredibly difficult to believe.

  • Excellent show!! Here is an example of lack of good longevity hurting the pereception on how good this man really was. The injuries finally got to him at age 33 and just dragged down his rate stats, then he just couldn't hack it anymore and retired at age 36! Easy home run record if healthy.

How good was the man?? Aside from being an outstanding center fielder and baserunner, here is how he stacked up in his league as a hitter. Check out his yearly ranks.

Out of the 13 full seasons in his prime('52-'64) he ranked 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,2,2,2,and 5! Thats right eight of thirteen he was the best, second best three more times and then fifth!!

Add in 153 SB and only 38 CS and WOW! Nobody really stole bases in that era(especially the Yanks) and he actually finished in the top five three times, and four other times in the top ten!

Everyone says Willie Mays this WIllie Mays that... Well folks during this 13 year stretch Mantle was a better hitter than Mays TEN TIMES!! Some of them by incredible margins! Mays may have had a tiny tiny edge in defense, but in no way does it even begin to close the offensive gap!

In fact, only RUth(13) and Ted Williams(9) had more number one finishes than Mantle, but RUth did it in an era where it was far easier to dominate(didn't have to worry about a Mays's stealing a crown here and there). No minorities, and smaller baseball age population available to compete. When Ruth's easier era to dominate is factored in, and Ted Williams defensive and running shortcomings are compared to Mantle's(Ruths defense too), I believe that........

In his prime MICKEY MANTLE WAS THE BEST PLAYER THAT EVER LIVED!!

Mantle was before my time, but apparently, he was timed at 3.1 seconds. I don't know what ichiro has been timed at. I'm sure he didn't last that long at that rate given the condition of his knees.

And don't forget that for a power hitter he had a great eye. He actually had more walks than strikeouts, which is a rarity for power hitters today.

Yeah, not only for his baseball career, but for his personal life as well.
