Jeter left off the all star team...deservedly so?

AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
I say yes...and I tire of those who try to bring up his past accomplishments as why he should be there.

He wasn't deserving, and didn't go...yet some try to call it a travesty.

Besides spammy, does anyone else think he got robbed?

When I compare him to M Tejada, at first glance, I agree. Tejada really means a lot to the Orioles. He is an All-Star shortstop.

However, upon close inspection, I notice that Jeter is a leadoff guy. Tejada bats in an RBI position. Of course Tejada would be among the leaders in RBI (not #1 ranked, but top 10 overall). Jeter is the leader for runs scored and has a higher OBP than Tejada, like he should.

Jeter's job is not to lead in HRs or RBIs, he is not in that kind of strategic position in the Batting order. He ranks #7 overall in OBP. Two other guys from the Yankees are ahead of him who bat 3rd and 4th--curious.

Conclusion: Tejada deserves to be on the All-star team. But how much more room is there for another shortstop? Jeter is not undeserving and its hard to compare a leadoff hitter to an RBI guy.

Jeter's numbers this year are not worse or better what he did in previous seasons. This is a great season for Jeter. Are there other shortstops that got ahead of Jeter besides Tejada?

I really do not think it matters.

jeter, I can assure you could care less.

even if he missed out on a bonus payment.

Players are not into stats and all the same crap that fans are.

it is a job to them, maybe after they retire then they reflect on what they did.

only number crunchers and fans worry about such things.

    Good for you.

I also focus on the current season in regards to All-Star selections. If I remember correctly, Derek Jeter lost out to Scott Podsednik in the Fan Voting. For the All-Star game, I would consider these two players to be lead-off players and I will compare their stats for those categories I consider to be the most important for lead off players.

    Scott Podsednik Derek Jeter
    OB% .369 .393
    Avg. .294 .308
    SB 44 10
    OPS .713 .844

The OB% and average is in favor of Jeter, but not by much. As you can see, Jeter has a big advantage in OPS (more home runs), but the main difference lies in stolen bases, in which Podsednik leads the league. For a leadoff man, this can be key as it changes the game once he reaches base. Even though I am a die hard Cubs fan, I must admiring watch the White Sox this year as it is exciting when Podsednik is on base. The opposing pitcher needs to worry about a stolen base, the manager can implement a hit and run, and Podsednik can simply take the opposing pitcher's focus off the game.

Although Jeter is good, he has not been as exciting and important to his team as Podsednik has been this year.

  • .308 BA
    11 HR
    37 RBI

In this era of inflated offensive stats, how can anyone make an argument for Jeter being an all star?

I'm probably a little different in my view of I don't care about who deserves it for the first half season, I want to see the superstars in the game even if they are struggling (although that is not Jeter's case, but Rolen for example). It's fine to put in some players who are having a great first half but the thought that they deserve it more I don't agree with, I'd rather see the true studs of the game that have been doing it for years.

Another thing to take into account is the second half of last season, why should this not be included? There hasn't been a vote since then. I was happy to see Beltran elected in for example I think he did deserve it after his second half last year.

Tejada deserves be the starting shortstop. Jeter should have made it as backup and Matsui is having a great year and should have made it too. Whats the deal with Beltran and Piazza making it? Give the voting back to the players and managers. It's a popularity contest and fans stuff the internet ballot boxes.

Last time I checked it was the FANS not the managers or players who pay these player's salaries.

I say the current system is perfect...let the players be selected by the fans, the pitching by the manager.

I think had your BOY Jeter made it, you'd have been screaming 'this is the best system ever!'

    NOPE.

By the way, Jeter still Da Leader and, God willing, will be very first Yankee to reach 3,000 hits. The All-Star rest will be very good for Jeter as he gears up for the final stretch and his ultimate goal of obtaining a ring for his pinky finger.

The players voted in Izturis which I thought was the worst pick made. Unless they were looking at his performance last year, because based on this year he did not deserve it. Vizquel has been just as good if not better in the field and far more productive at the plate. I agree that the system is currently very good.

Tejada is, without question, the best SS in the AL, if not all of MLB at the moment. There is absolutely no way a case can be made for Jeter to be chosen over him - no way at all.

Too bad Jeter couldn't be a real leader and move aside for the superior shortstop.

All-Star Game goes on without Jeter

All-Star Game goes on without Jeter
Captain not at Midsummer Classic for second time since '97
    By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com

DETROIT -- He has been a part of six of the last seven All-Star Games. A former All-Star MVP, he holds the record for the highest All-Star batting average among all players with at least 10 at-bats.

He leads the American League with 69 runs scored, is hitting .308, ranks among the league leaders with a .393 on-base percentage and is the AL's reigning Gold Glove winner at shortstop.

So why isn't Derek Jeter at the All-Star Game?

That's a question that was on everybody's mind on Monday, as players from both leagues met the media during All-Star Monday.

"He's the face of baseball. If you're trying to promote the game in a positive way, he's supposed to be here," said Gary Sheffield. "He has All-Star numbers. What's happened to this game when Derek Jeter isn't here?"

Sheffield also called it a "black eye" to the sport to have an All-Star Game without Jeter, whose .700 career batting average in the Midsummer Classic is a record.

Jeter finished second to Baltimore's Miguel Tejada in the fan voting for the starters, then came in second to Chicago's Scott Podsednik in the Ameriquest 2005 All-Star Final Vote.

The players elected Texas' Michael Young to serve as the backup shortstop on the team, leaving Jeter off the team for just the second time since 1997. Young said he wasn't insulted that people want to see Jeter in the game, but made no apologies for occupying the second shortstop spot.

"I don't take it as a slap to me. I'm a huge fan of Derek's; he's an incredible player," Young said. "I have a ton of respect for him. He's a great guy. It's unfortunate, because Derek is very deserving."

Another one of Jeter's teammates was among the most outspoken when it came to their captain's absence from the festivities in Detroit.

"Wherever Derek is right now, he's probably enjoying himself," said Alex Rodriguez. "We miss him here, and I think the game misses him. That's how it goes. I wish he was here. If it was up to me, he'd be here every year."

    All-Star Game 2005

But it wasn't only the Yankees' players that felt the game was missing something without Jeter. Even the rival Red Sox were surprised not to see Jeter on the AL squad, though they'll get to see him on Thursday when the Yanks and Sox kick off a four-game set at Fenway Park.

"He's on that list of the best players in the game," said Johnny Damon. "Derek finally gets to have three days off, so he may be happy, but the All-Star Game is definitely strange without Derek Jeter."

Yeah Gary Sheffield isn't biased or anything.

And oooh 10 at bats is a HUGE sample size.

Look, Jeter is having a good year, but an all-star year? No, there were more deserving players this year. That was evident.

Yeah, god cares if Jeter gets to 3000 hits or not.

Jetes will probably come on strong and win the Batting Title like he almost did two years ago.

    Whew thanks for the laugh.

He will 'probably' come on strong like he 'almost' did 2 years ago?

Why even post this crap, if you aren't going to make a definite prediction, spam boy?

I have to agree - this is a wishy-washy endorsement to say the least.

I wonder what kind of career "Jetes" would have if he spent the last 10 years or so in Kansas City. Or, Tampa Bay. Would he even be a blip on the radar screen?

What's with Sheffield, by the way? He seems to say one stupid thing per day now, instead of just one stupid thing every week or so -

First, you get this gem -

<< <i>Sheffield also called it a "black eye" to the sport to have an All-Star Game without Jeter, >>

    image

    Then, you get this -

<< <i>"We're going to bring our gold, our jewel in there, which is A-Rod. We're going to see how the chips fall this time. That's our man and we know he's our man. We're going to look out for him when he's in a situation like that. When he's in a hostile environment, we've got to make sure he's comfortable because it helps our team. (And if something like the Varitek incident happens again?) That's why I say it's going to be different. We're going to make sure that Alex is taken care of." >>

Oh man, I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried!

Sheffield's brain is apparently fried from all the roids...he can't make up his mind, and is too busy trying to scramble to make sure all his teammates are placated, he has to say they are all the reason they win.

    Who knows.
