    Try this:

    1) Build a time machine
    2) go back in time about 6 months
    3) start reading all of the posts on this forum about people getting ripped off buying cheap Mantle rookies on eBay
    4) convince yourself not to do that
    5) when the auction you bid on comes around, ignore it (or better yet, add a post to this forum so others will ignore it too)

As long as you spend less than $5,000 on your time machine, you'll come out ahead. Good luck!

Welcome newbie! Please identify yourself from the following list:

    1) Troll from the Beckett boards
    2) Drunk regular posting under an alternate ID
    3) Total idiot

If #3, I suggest you find a buyer even dumber than yourself and flip the card for a profit.

Come on now, guys. He's either yanking our chain for yuks or has truly lost $5K on a Mantle scam. Until we get more evidence that the former is true, I for one am prepared to offer some sympathy to the latter.

boltman, are you saying you received it and it's obviously a modern counterfeit? Please link to the auction and show a scan of what you received.

And if you're some scammer-in-training looking to mine this forum for tips on how to sell fake Mantles and get away with it ... woe betide you, my friend. We is 2 smart 4 that.

I love the scammer's pre-emptive appeal -- "EBAY: Please do not cancel this auction. It in no way violates any rules. Thank you!!"

I have to say, that is one of the lowest-budget '52 Mantle scams I've seen, with a $100 BIN. image

Not to be heartless, but boltman's post defies credibility:

    "Monday July 11, 2005 1:11 AM (NEW!)
I just got scammed for 5k on a fake 52 topps mickey mantle."

Who gets scammed for 5 grand at 1:00 in the morning in front of a computer?

I think boltman has probably bolted.

eBay has not let a single 52 Mantle scam auction stay up for more than 24 hours since they finally started to crack down about 2 months ago. The only time lately that auctions have been successful is when the card is $100 or less, it's a 1 day auction, and the buyer uses Buy-It-Now.

I don't even bother offering my guide any longer, as it's no longer even a necessity on eBay.

Dude, you should be *very* proud of yourself. You've saved a lot of people a lot of money while making eBay a better place for everyone.

If the guys running the Time Travel Fund were the ones who boosted his $5,000, then they've probably already calculated that in 400 years (at 5% interest compounded yearly), they'd have $1,495,166,756,244.22 (that's 1.5 trillion for the large-number challenged). They'd easily be able to buy any number of high-grade Mantle rookies for that amount of dough.

    They're obviously the culprits.

  • I was bidding on the sgc 10 52 mantle that was on ebay. I got an e-mail from sombody and he told that he had a nice psa 3. he sent me scans. the seral number checked out with psa everything looked good I talked with the guy on the phone for a while. when my package arives it is a ungraded fake in screw down holder. The persons name is Rick diesel and he is lives in ohio.
  • I've just gotta ask:

If you were bidding on an SGC "10" 1952 Mantle on ebay(where you might have some recourse), why would you then settle for a PSA 3..........off ebay (good luck trying to get your money back).

Let me get this straight... within 3 days, Friday - Saturday - Sunday, you bid on a Mantle, received an email from somebody named Rick, viewed scans, checked PSA to make sure the cert number checked out, sent payment, received card and determined it was fake?

The auction you bid on is a 5 day auction, still running... Unless this guy is your nextdoor nieghboor, I am wondering how you complteted this transaction so quickly.

I never understood the concept of screwdowns, either. The magnet cases are pretty slick though.

bolt- you either got scammed or you're having a good laugh here.

If you were scammed I believe your best course of action would be through the post office as this clearly is a case of fraud. The USPS is probably the only one who knows his true identity as I'm sure you must show ID for a PO box.

I hear ya about getting scammed - I just paid $1,000,000 for a t206 Honus Wagner from an ebay seller who swore on the grave of his old pet cat that the card was real. I sent it to PSG to get it slabbed and they returned it as a counterfeit xerox copy. I was suspicious when after receiving it from the seller, I noticed it was a black & white card because I was fairly certain that a real t206 Wagner is a color card. I am also really pist off.
