1971 pop explosion discussion...

What's the old addage: "Be careful what you wish for" ?

Seems like we all have a 71 submission on our desk or in transit to or from PSA. I have one next to me myself. The first batches are poppin up on Ebay and I dove in early on some 10's.

I just added a few cards to my 71 Topps Hky set and decided to update the population #'s on my spreadsheet.

Almost to a card every PSA 9 has grown in pop by 3 or 4 with some 9's now having 7 more in existance.

I have mixed emotions on this as I'm happy that there are 50 PSA 9's on the bay for me to take a shot at. Yet somehow I was happier with this set last week when the pops were much lower.

I know I'll be taking the exploding population into account as I bid and just want to bring this to light for anyone building any 71 set. Check the new pop's. They'll be expanding weekly.

There are 3 full weeks of grading left on the July special.image

As a buyer is that not a good thing?

I've noticed a big increase in the number of 71s showing up...7s had all but disappeared. Nice lot just closed, and another is closing in a couple of days.

    Absolutely Steve.

But one may want to check the pops as a card listed as a 1 of 3 may very well be a 1 of 10 now.

I even said on a different thread to watch out for the 1970 Dad's Cookies Hockey cards as the next hot thing. I see a 30% jump in grading on these since April. Weird thing is they are not hitting ebay.Hmmmm

  • << <i>don please tell where i can get a vending box? >>

    RVC

I have never seen a vending box from 1971-72 Topps hockey. I said vending meaning cut card cases not the traditional 500 count boxes you see in baseball. the guy that has the cut card cases isn't going to giving them up anytime soon either

i really like that set but the way PSA holders them is unbelievable. A PSA 10 can become a PSA 5 during shipment because the cards have so much room to move around

Plus there are 2 different size holders they are putting the Dads in.

This really turned me off on the set.

hey fletch if you want to see some psa opc sheet cut, check out the 68-69 OPC psa 9's mintxpress auctions ending tonite. The difference between psa sheet cut and bvg sheet cut is PSA attempts to catch them BVG does not
  • rvcrvc Posts: 559 ✭✭
bob it was from about 6-9 months ago, i think. i looked for the completed auction on ebay but i guess they dont let you go back that far. topps, 1 of 1 , no opc psa 10's.i remember that i sniped with about 30 seconds to go and was the high bidder for about 10 seconds . the previous high bidder was our very own 1979collector so maybe he'll refresh our memories. i signed up for esnipe after that one.

Some posters are indicating that sheet-cut cards are to be found in PSA 9 and 10 holders. How do you know they're sheet-cuts?

doncherry is right that Beckett doesn't care whether a card is sheet-cut and PSA does. Anybody who has cracked out a BVG 9 or 9.5 and had PSA reject it as "evid. trimming" or "altered" can testify to that. Under high magnification, they can see the differences between a factory cut and the various types of aftermarket cutting. The angle of the cut, among other things, can be discerned.

If a dealer or collector has perfected a way to cut from a sheet that perfectly mimicks the factory cutting technology of the era, even under high magnification, that is bad news for the hobby but hardly PSA's fault. They do have a policy of rejecting sheet cuts when they're detected, which is more than Beckett can say. If you polled Beckett nation, I wonder if most of them would even object to the grading of cards that were cut yesterday instead of the year of issue.

The last time we had this discussion on here a couple of good respected hockey posters got banned(Marc Nitka for one) . If you want details you may have better luck with someone emailing you. The guy who had the number #1 69-70 OPC hockey set on the registry had to rid his set of a handfull of sheet cuts and it dropped his set from #1 to #3 . He at one point had in his description a thank you to all the unscruptulous dealers who knowingly sold him sheet cuts . He listed most of them on ebay with a disclaimer
  • jrdolanjrdolan Posts: 2,549 ✭✭
I guess I would ask how a collector could tell it was sheet-cut, inside the slab, when the graders couldn't tell when they held it in their hands and did whatever they did to check it. In other words, if it was done so perfectly as to fool PSA, how could I reach that conclusion peering at ithe edges through the slab?

Somebody said "check out the sheet cuts in PSA holders" and I had a question about how they could tell, especially from an auction scan. But I don't wanna get anyone banned. I'll drop it.

Back to building a '71 topps set. In two months I have been able to put together 74/133 cards from this set in psa 8/9.. I've always loved this set because of the bright colors surrounded by the white borders... I hope to be over 100 different cards by the end of July... Right now its a buyers market with so many 8's and 9's available at reasonable prices. I have a feeling that many of these 9's and 10's are going to dry up in the near future. I know that a few collectors have gotten ahold of vending quality '71's recently and once they are gone who knows when the next big load will emerge again!! Checking out the pops there are still 20-30 cards that are still very low pops in 9 and most 10's are 1/1's... Paul

  • Hi Bob!
It's not on the registry as of yet! I'm going to wait until I hit the 100 card mark out of the 133 and then enter it. I'm at about 57% and a gpa roughly of 8.33 or so... I hope to finish it by the end of the summer in psa 8/9 and a gpa of 8.25. That's my goal!! What happened to the #1 set listed under "Pucks of Color"??? It disappeared about a month ago.. Is this set part of the ebay selling frenzy going on or are all the new cards raw examples being graded..

    Paul,

I'm not sure on the Pucks set. May resurface with MOSH. He's branching into hockey as of late. I believe the Ebay 71's are just graded from vending but I'm speculating on everything.

Good luck with your set. I'll be watching for it on the registry.

  • HI Bob!
Many of the high grade '71's are from the Crane set that was about 50-60 % complete with over a 9.00 gpa... I guess he decided to liquidate the set!! This makes your set even more solid since you were able to purchase many of his psa 10's and your main competition for a complete psa 9/10 set is out of the running!

    Paul,

I was just told that same thing by the guy with the vending. (great dealer who will remain anonymous here unless he chooses to chime in). image So maybe the Pucks set was sold outright?
It'll be back either on the registry or on the bay. There are quite a few 8's up right now. I just picked up another nine 9's from Mr. Crane tonight bringing me up to 80% complete. I missed a nice Hadfield 10 last night from DSL. I fell asleep watching the AS game.

Best of luck with your set & LMK when you get her on the registry.

  • Hey Bob!
Congrats on picking up another batch of 9's tonight! I can't wait until you finish your entire set
in psa 9/10.. As far as I'm concerned it will be one of the crown jewels in the set registry for sets from
the late 60's and on in hockey... So many psa 10 1/1's and 9's with extremely low pops... I know that there has been a jump in psa 9's on the registry but that will taper soon..
I know the dealer you have been in contact with!! He's a great guy and he has been a great help to me and my collection!! He has great insight into all areas of cards and I consider him to be one of the best collectors I've dealt with!!!! He knows a boatload about the '71's and who owns what and what cards are tough and why!!!
I'm up to 87/132 now on my set.. Once I get to 100 I'll post it. I will wait on buying the Orr, Dryden, checklist, and Howe until the end.... Great to talk to another '71 hockey lover!
    Paul
  • OnlypsahockeyOnlypsahockey Posts: 1,479 ✭✭
    Paul,

My Orr and my checklist are 8's. I just haven't seen them in 9's.
I haven't picked up a Dryden yet as the 8's are pretty pricey so I figured I'd just wait on a sweet 9. When I do find them I'll give you first crack at the 8's.

    thanks, Bob
