Did you know that Poly-vinyl holders also damages paper money?

I did not know this. My dealer bought a collection of paper money that had been stored in polyvinyl sheets designed to hold currency. All of the bills were ruined and stuck, almost glued to the poly vinyl.

PVC Sucks!!image Poly vinyl holders should be OUTLAWED from the coin biz/hoddy.

The plasticiser in the pvc which gives it flexibility soaks into the paper like an ink blotter. Is there any way to remove this oil from the paper without harming it? Would acetone desolve the ink or damage the paper?

Acetone should not damage the paper, but it does run the risk of damaging the ink. Carbon tetrachloride might be a little safer for the ink but may be harder to come by. It used to be commonly used as a drycleaning fluid but it was discontinued some time back because it both damages the ozone layer and it has been declared a carcinegin.

Yes, I knew. That stuff is responsible for so much - yet people continue to use it. As long as people think they are ok even for temporary use they will be used mistakenly for long term use. Novices don't know the difference and that starts the problem all over again.

I did not know that since I don't do paper money. But if I do, I will know to look out for it now image

    Thanks

Unfortunate for those who have had paper affected by it. For the rest of us, a good to know fact. I did always wonder.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
