1975 BB - Opinion

Have this on the other forum, but thought maybe I could get more responses here. I have been looking over on Ebay at the 1975s BB for sale and have started thinking of doing this set. I have more of an emotional attachement for this set. Even though I am currently doing 67s, I was only born a year earlier (opps gave my age away). I collect 67s because it is one of my favorites, if not my favorite, designed Topps set. But looking at the 75s really takes me back to my childhood and buying tons of packs. I think I might enjoy collecting this set a little more and it would be cheaper to do. Just wanted some opinions on this set and also wondered if you collect a set for what specific reason.

P.S. Would you recommend doing the minis or regulars. I do not have a preference exactly, but growing up in Michigan it seems like the minis were the only ones I bought.

Thanks for the help.

    Stingray;

The '75 set is a classic and the most widely collected set of the '70s I believe. The regular set is generally preferred over the somewhat gimmicky mini set. As such, the regulars tend to be more liquid because there is generally stronger demand. Unfortunately, the glut of '70s grading specials by PSA has flooded the market with PSA 8 amd 9 cards. PSA 9 commons generally sell for $10 to $20 based on population, amd PSA 8s have a hard time selling for the price of grading. Your best bet would be to locate lots of graded cards as the cost per card will truly be a bargain.

    Good luck!

its definetly a buyer's market right now on 75 BB.

    Go for it!

  • Very cool set indeed.Loaded with HOF'ers and two pretty good rookie cards of some guys named Brett and Yount.
Never had any as a kid(77's and 78's were what I had a ton of) but it's one that I always toy around with and have actually been buying some raw cards to build a raw set.
Good luck if you do it.

Next to the '57 Topps set, the '75 set is really my favorite! For some reason, just have a really good connection with it. It's one of those sets that as I was growing up I'd buy raw cards in any condition just to say that I had them. Loved that Brett, Yount, Hernandez, Lynn & Carter rookies were all in the set. Just cool colors and cool cards overall.

If I were to start the set, I'd be tempted to do the minis due to it being a bigger challenge. But, my plan is to complete my '72 set that I'm currently working on and then jump on the '75s next.

    Good luck!

    Thanks,

I just stopped at the local card shop on the way home and bought a few 75s raw, I would say in NM condition, but was not really worried about that, just wanted to review some. By the way ArnyVee, how does one buy raw graded cards? Think you meant ungraded? It is funny with the 67s that I have so far they are nice to look at, but with the 75s, I can actually remember owning those cards at one time in my life.

Sting fwiw at times i have seen complete nm sets on ebay. they go for around 500.00

many are made from vending and are at least wax stained free. centering can be an issue though.

    Good for you.

I'll tell you what. I have tens of thousands of NRMT-MT or MINT 75's, and in that condition I wouldnt sell them at the book price of .50c each.

Thanks for the help, I am going to have to go at this one card at a time though. After seeing this card I think I convinced myself to go after the 75s. The floodgate of memories came rushing back after seeing this card. I can remember having this card a thinking this is the coolest card ever, hat on backwards, etc. Not to give away my age, but there use to be a TV show in the 70s called SWAT, and this card always reminded me of that show. There was always one of the characters wearing his hat backwords.

Thanks for catching that Stingray! LOL

By the way, I'd look for larger lots where the price per card is less than going at it one card at a time. But, that's just if you have the extra coin lyin' around for it. I've been making deals here and there for my 72's, but my best deals have been with the lots.

Good luck! I'll be joining you in the hunt for 75's once I get this MONSTER 1972 set finished!

Sting, another thing I was doing as I briefly went after this set is to try and get 5-6 singles from a seller as they usually list a lot of auctions at the same time and usually combine shipping. Just fwiw, but if you have to pay $3-4 a card on shipping it does really start to add up. So if you could get 5-6 cards and pay only $6(e.g.) for shipping, you can save a few bucks a card.

I bought my 75 set raw off e-bay in 2002 it was advertised as nm/mt-mt and its more like nm. Cost me $350. The Yount and the Brett are too o/c to be graded but a few of the stars will be 8's. As for the commons, I think its cheaper to pick them up as I stated above than to buy them raw and pay for the grading. JMO

Anyhow, gl and its an awesome set that always seems to have a strong following.

If I was ever crazy enough to do a massive baseball set (give me time image ) this would be the one. I love the design: very 70's but still attractive by today's standards.

Stingray, I don't know how high-grade you would want to go with this set, but there is a nice lot of the MVP subset cards, all in PSA 8 here.

Well here is a group of 75s, but you can only see the top 2 on the scan. Wish you could see other cards besides the flip. The top two have fish eyes on each card, makes me wonder if they all do? Maybe he has replaced those for himself with clean ones.

I have noticed that on quite a few of them on ebay. I don't mind if they are subtle, but sone look like mini fireworks on the borders.

    Hey boards,

I just broke a 75 topps set and graded a whole mess of them. I am selling the 9s and the 2 psa 10s that I got separately but I would sell the rest of the psa gradeds as a lot, along with the rest of the raw set which is all psa 7 or better quality. I did not pull anything I thought would not have a shot at a 9.

A great way to get 176 psa 7s and 8s from this great set, including Brett psa 8, Yount psa 7 and tons of stars in 8.

pm if interested with an offer or I can tally up one for you. I have placed a * next to all the HOF'ers for your convenience.

    Stingray,

Of course mine is a bias opinion, but I think your choice should be 75' Mini's! Definately a far more challenging set! I am currently putting together a raw set that would mostly grade PSA 8 with some PSA 9's. Most of the cards will be from prior (legit) unopened wax packs and be pack fresh. Might be a few off centers, but nothing too off center. I am placing each card in an individual card saver and I would suggest that if you are buying a raw set that you purchase one that has been placed in card savers. Binder sets will yield very few if any 8's or 9's as the cards are stacked and the corners and edges don't do well in such an environment! I started with a raw set in card savers with some of the high end cards already graded in PSA 9. I spent a bundle on it and for the most part 80% of the raw cards graded PSA 8 or better.

Definately a buyers market now. I am taking my sweet time finishing my raw set and will hold it until I can get a reasonable price for it. I've
not yet seen a raw set since the one I purchased just over a year ago that would truely qualify as a NM set. To many binder sets with off center and dinged corners in most sets I've seen for sale on ebay. Of the sets that I've seen placed in cards savers....many look like they were once in binders and or to many off center cards used. Take your time and don't rush! Wait for a truely quality set to come around and then be willing to pay a little extra for it. If you truely want a nicely graded set you could even wait for large lots PSA 8 cards. I've seen several of these resently going for around $3-$4 a card. These lots have been made up of mainly commons and a few minor stars. But it is far less expensive than buying raw and then grading which is far more risky. Finding a trusting seller is key when buying raw! Any PSA 8 you can get for $5 or less is a bargain as the grading cost alone would be $5-$6.

BTW.....I too love the Larry Haney card.....(in the Mini version it is very rare. Only 4 PSA 8's and none higher!)

Best of Luck to you in any quest you choose involving either Mini or Regular 75 Topps Baseball Sets!

I got two 10s, Kranepool and Lindblad. Both are sold.

I got a bunch of 9s, including Yaz and Keith Hernandez rookie. They are on ebay under my user id BKritz.

Free shipping to the 75 nuts on the board on those 9s.

I would like to do the minis, but I think that it might be too hard? I actually bought tons of minis growing up in Michigan. I think it is a toss up for me on which one I like better, but I think it will be easier to do the regular one.

Regarding the 75 Mini's being hard.....it's what makes it worth the fight. It's like being able to play the game of baseball. It being "Hard" is what makes it great! The fact that the prices of the cards have come down especially for the PSA 9 commons makes it nice as well. A PSA 8 set wouldn't be that tough, except for a few cards. Take your time, think about it.......why did you say you wanted to go after it.......because it's what reminded you of when you opened them as a kid image Did you open the regular card or the Mini......."The MINI"! That's your baby....don't let the "Hard" get in your way. Dream a little......Live a little.......Go after what you really want......if it's the regular so be it. But don't go after the regular 75's just because it's easier? That's not what life is all about image When you acquire a high grade 75 Mini set (considering the fact you collected them in Michigan when you were young) I would think your going to be far more satisfied? Just a thought I figured I'd share image
