Half-year update: What coin purchase/acquisition of 2005 are you most excited about?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,800 ✭✭✭✭✭
The calendar year is nearly half over, the summer lull is upon us, and my fiscal year ends on June 30, 2005 image . It;s been quite a year for my collection, so far. I was fortunate that a high-grade New Orleans gold set was broken up as I benefited from the trickle-down effect as others grabbed the finest knowns. I will post my favorite coin aquisition of calendar 2005 later in this thread.

A 1969 Coin World/Philadelphia Mint medal in bronze, on eBay, for $4.00. A VERY seldom seen post-1960 medal that no one but myself apparently cares about (I was the only bidder.) A good example of a very scarce item that sells for very little money because of supply and demand.

    <--- That one.

J-161 in PF58BN. I love patterns, brown copper, large cents, and the no stars coronet design, and I finally found one that fits the bill on all counts! image

Still this one, a nice one-year only design that closed a giant hole in my clipped type set:

  • My first 100.00 plus coin a nice PCGS MS63 1904 Liberty Head Nickel for my type set, I have looked at alot and I feel this one is undergraded but then again I'm no expert on these, but it looks better then some 65's I have seen in the same year.

My numismatic goal for the year was to pick up a 1918-S, 1921-S, or 1927-S Buffalo in mint state, but I topped that by picking up a 1926-S PCGS MS63 last month. I've pretty much shot my wad for the year (or two).

You should change your fiscal year to end on June 30, also. You would be back in business on Friday. image

My most exciting purchase was not only the highlight of 2005 but (so far) my most exciting purchase of the millennium: six pieces of Central American Republic gold from the Eliasberg sale. Here's one:

Eureka reminds me-- 5 little Libre's from Peru (3 gem) from Eliasberg/Clapp. And a totally obsure MS-65 1779 1/2 Mohar Gold piece (Nepal) from the same sale. Where else will I find a Gem Gold coin minted in 1779 for less than $900???? Don't think I'll do better this year!image

I'd rather not state what it was, but I've made my 'big' purchase for the year and I very happy with it. Definately the favorite piece in my collection. I also managed to pick up 16 new San Diego Commemoratives for my horde so far this year, included a couple nice toned ones, so I'm very happy with that.
