It's hard to tell for sure, but I think you might be on to something. It does look bogus.

  • I have owned 5 "Leaf" quarters. (4 down and 1 uptypes) IMHO this is a fake.

The leaf does look strange on that one.
  • There's no guesswork involved... that coin's been image with.

It's the same image in every down leaf lot. Poor image or fake, or both.

It's probably just that this is a terrible pixellated scan. Amazing that anyone here could pick that out to be 100% fake from that image.

I think what we're saying is it looks like it might be 78% fake and 22% real.

It's looks like yet another coin from "old scratch," which means you'll have a "devil" of time getting rid of this bogus tar baby which has a nice convenient extra leaf scratched into it.

Looks like a terrible scan to me.

Looks real to me, but the scanner caught the high points with light making it look odd and funky.

Maybe it's a new variety... half down leaf.

I let the seller know his auction authenticity is being called into question, why, and offered to post a better picture and explanation if he sends one.

That could be possible, just wanted to get other opinions. I will not be bidding. This is like the speared bison, it will fade to nothing a year from now.

Seller replied with the e-mail below. He also has positive feedback from at least two unique buyers for these coins. I suspect this is legit. Now if he's smart the nicer ones are on their way to PCGS!

    Brian,
My digital camera takes a small unclear photo of the coins. The picture posted is a scan from one of the quarters being sold. I had 60 coins total. 20 upleafs and 40 down-leafs. One customer bought all 20 of the up-leafs. There are a couple buyers who have purchased 4 or more each of the down-leafs. I offer a full guarantee on any of the quarters. I have well over 1,000 transactions completed on Ebay at 100% positive feedback. You don't obtain those kinds of numbers with hot air. The picture of the quarters looks a little odd only because it was done on my scanner. The actual coins put the picture to shame. All customers have been extremely satisfied so far.

  • Thanks for the info Brian. I have no interest in the coins, but thought it looked funny.
