I just bought the coin from a long time friend and dealer. The coin came from a old collector/client of his. Sold his entire collection of coins.
I have thought about the upgrade, as I did pay pq dollars for it. But it will just sit in my collection anyway.
But as far as sending it to NCS, I don't think so. The reason I liked it so much was because it wasn't messed with.
As far as marks on the coin. There is hit on the cheek of liberty. Lengthwise from the nose to the chin. Has a couple tiny tics in the obverse left field.
The reverse has one hit only thats abouve the eagles beak. Coin is so prooflike, I would swear its a proof. Added photos showing proofness qualityobv
That's an extremely nice looking coin by the pics. One possibility for the lack of a gem grade is the slight discoloration on Liberty's thigh. Another could be hairlines, which won't show in the pics.... but it's certainly devoid of bagmarks enough for gem!
Great coin! I don't think it is proof, there are many PL seated coins. The discoloration on the leg drew my eye also. I think this is a marvelous coin and I would never send it to NCS. It is a 64+ in my book.
You have an exceptionally clean no motto Seated $. Typically the open field above the eagle looks like the shark in Jaws bit it at least once. I have a 59 O in PC 3 and the contact marks in that area are why it is in a 3 holder.
The only thing I see on the reverse is what appears to be a lint mark below the olive branch above the E in ONE. Agree w TDN re the pricing, and yes, as Oreville wrote, people are paying premiums for scarce coins in older PC holders.
I assume the darker area on Miss Liberty's leg is a toning spot. PCGS is very tough on Seated $s. You're going to have a very hard time trying to get an upgrade here. I've actually seen some stunning Seated $s in person that PCGS would not put into 5 holders. Keep in mind that if you try an upgrade, the coin will come out of its present (old) holder; you have some risk of loss by sending it in for an upgrade at PCGS (ie, your coin is worth less in a new holder if it comes back in the same grade).
"Vou invadir o Nordeste, "Seu cabra da peste, "Sou Mangueira......."
As far as cracking this out, not going to happen. I have been searching for Seated dollar like this for sometime. All I have found in MS is washed out white or coins that had unattractive toning. This lady isn't leaving my hands for a long time, or this holder.
"Lint Mark" What you see on the reverse below the eagle is a scratch on the holder. The reverse is a solid 65 in my opinion. Albeit, I am by far no expert at grading. Has two horizontal tics above the beak. These aren't readily noticeable with the naked eye. They can be seen when you angle the coin.
The obverse is a 64 maybe a 65 with todays standards. Has three tiny tics on the eagles left side in the field. The only noticeable hits on the obverse are unfortunatly on the cheek ( scarface) a hit that runs from the nose to the chin lengthwise. Hard to see until angled but its there. Then on the date 0 has two contact marks. (bottom left and middle right)
I call it a pq 64 because the reverse is stellar and eye appeal "very prooflike surface".
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

Biggest coin mistake I ever made.
Try it.
<< <i>64, 65, it's still the same coin. >>
Yes, it's still the same coin but one is worth $5K and the other is worth $11K
Those numbers are soooo out of date. I'd pay $40,000 for a nice looking PCGS MS65. A decent NGC MS65 would sell for at least $20,000.
As a PQ MS64, your coin is worth at least $8,000.
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.
I like it in the 64 holder. Keep it where it is. The obverse still counts for more than 50% of the grade.
When you are ready to sell those green insert holders will not so subtly add to the siginificance of the quality of the coin!
Once you cross that coin, you lose the allure of the green insert which is a growing allure.

I love it
