NCS Named the Official Conservation Service of the PNG
Posted by at 6/24/2005 11:25:56 AM

Numismatic Conservation Service (NCS) has been named the official conservation service of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG). This relationship raises awareness of and reinforces the role of professional conservation in numismatics.

The PNG is a nonprofit organization comprised of the world's top rare coin and paper money experts. As numismatic professionals, their primary mission is to make the hobby safe for collectors and investors by maintaining rigid standards of excellence for their member dealers. The average PNG dealer has more than 25 years of experience.

NCS is the only professional service of its kind dedicated to conserving numismatic property. Staffed by professional numismatists with decades of experience, NCS conservators provide sophisticated and targeted treatment to improve the surface stability and appearance of coins, medals, and tokens.

Executive Director of the PNG, Robert Brueggeman, addresses the need for professional conservation in numismatics: "The PNG has recently adopted NCS as its only recommended professional conservation organization. When a painting is in need of conservation we turn to the professionals in that industry, when a coin is in need of conservation we turn to NCS. The PNG looks forward to a continuing successful relationship, where our member dealers utilize NCS to conserve their coins, eliminating the risk involved in improper techniques."

The President of NCS, Dave Camire, suggests that this arrangement will enable NCS to better fulfill its primary mission. "This latest endorsement will help spread awareness for conservation and ultimately help to assure better long-term care of our numismatic treasures for the years to come. We look forward to assisting the fine group of dealers of the PNG to achieve this goal."

In addition, Steve Eichenbaum, CEO of NCS, commented: "NCS is very proud to have received this stamp of approval from the most respected dealer organization in the industry. It reflects a mutual commitment to service and integrity in the rare coin industry."

NCS accepts all raw and certified coins, tokens and medals for conservation, and does not do repairs or mechanical alterations of any kind. To obtain a submission form or for more information, contact Numismatic Conservation Service directly at 1-866-NCS-COIN (866-627-2646) or email NCSHelp@ncscoin.com. And, there were so many conservation services to choose from. The competition must have been fierce.

I think it's great that the PNG now endorses the cleaning of coins. I'd expect nothing less.
  • But it does give the Coin Vault group something nice to say about NCS image

This is quite an accomplishment to be recognized by such an esteemed organization.

They get rid of that unsightly colored tarnish that some refer to as "toning". They perform a great service.

And how much did that cost NCS?
  • FatMan beat me to it!
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

They do outstanding work. Nothing wrong with a little promoting.

    A question I have:

Does NCS have any published policy for what the WILL and WON'T do? Have they ever turned down "conserving" a coin because it would do harm, or would not be in the best interest of the coin or hobby?

    Just wondering.

    Yes, with some regularity.

Hey, maybe this will lead to even more double-dipped and unnatural looking 19th century coinage. I get a chill up my spine every time I see a stark white MS67 or MS68 seated liberty coin. Then I realize that for every one of these, there is one less original toned floating around. Remember, it's all about the $$.

I'm waiting for the eventual announcement concerning who is the official "Coin Doctor" of the hobby.

I work for PNG member dealer Rare Coins of New Hampshire and would like to state that the PNG did not solicit all of their member dealers regarding this issue. It is likely that just the selling group members for shipwreck coins were involved, [sarcasm]for what reason we can not fathom.[/sarcasm] Rare Coins of New Hampshire in no way endorses Numismatic Conservation Service and will be sure to express our displeasure with this endorsement to the PNG directors shortly.

    Tonelover,

I always admire someone who is willing to speak out and stand up for what he believes in !! I am glad that some PNG member-dealers have the sense to question this, if only because the PNG endorsement does create the appearance of endorsing the practice of conservation. While we would all agree that there are some instances in which conservation has been useful (shipwreck coins covered with seaweed, perhaps), most of us would also agree that there are some questionable aspects to it as well (stripping of original proof gold, which then gets resubmitted for possible upgrade at the sister company NGC).

It is possible that NCS is looking to enhance its credibility in advance of any possible fallout from Ohio. This may benetfit NCS, but what does it do for PNG other than the cash received (if any)? Personally, I think that paid endorsements should be accompanied by a full disclosure. I remember the squabbles between PCGS and NGC over the ANA endorsement, and the increasing amounts of money involved.

Coins are not unstable and do not need their appearance improved, unless of course your shooting for a nice bump over at NGC image

Was NCS also involved in the Ohio scandal? I thought the link was to NGC.

Pay more to get more? Don't think they dip them for free. Then send them accross the hall for grading.
Sorry but this required a venting.
