Grade these two IH's

shylockshylock Posts: 4,288 ✭✭✭
Both are imaged by Heritage to keep the photography consistent, and both are post 1886 designs. The slabs are cut out, the dates and possible mintmarks are blacked out. Granted, the date is an important part of the grading process -- in more ways than one. Don't cheat by visiting their archives!

  • They're either '08 or 09 S. I think one looks proof. That being the botton one. For fun I'll guess. Top cent MS66. Botton cent PR68.

All coins are tough to grade by images but I will play the game.

    Top coin MS65RB maybe a 1909S

    Bottom coin MS66RD maybe a 1908S

    I will say

top Ms-65R (although I think its closer to high RB than RD) but still holdered as red

the bottom Ms-66rd (IMO, though a 65 bumped for extremely sharp luster and color)

    Well, the first looks 65R

    The second looks about PCGS67R.

Is the diagonal line running from the mouth to the cheek on the bottom coin a pin scratch?

Coin #1 is a PCGS MS66RD 1908-S listed in their current NY Sig Sale.

"The date is an important part of the grading process" is my point about this coin. This is a market graded 08-S all the way. Keep in mind I'm judging this by Heritage's pics, it may be much brighter in person. But I doubt the strike and condition looks any different in person. Besides the typical weak first few feather tip strikes this coin has many obverse problems -- spots above the T of UNITED, below the M of AMERICA, between the O and F of OF -- for starters. It's a very rough looking coin for a 66RD, even for a 1908-S.

    Coin #2 is an NGC 1895 MS66RD.

Paul, I agree with you. The 08S might 5 on a good day at PCGS & I wouldn't want it in my collection. Although it is much nicer than the first coin, with that prominent contact mark on the Indian's neck, I can't see the second coin in a 6 holder

Interesting....love grading photos! The first may be a 66R but it's not one I would pay good money for. I would for this one! 67R if not for the small scratch in front of her face.

    TL,

The 1908S you posted has about the best strike I have seen of that date. A super scarce coin with full feather tips. That looks like it could be a 67 without the small scratch in front of her face. What a coin!
