Old Buff nickel found in change

My granddaughter (she's 9) phoned a bit ago to say she'd found it and would I like it. So I drove over to see it. It's dirty, but there are enough parts not covered with gunk to identify it as a buff. The date is completely obliterated and the buff's skin is as smooth as . . .

But the look on her face when she handed it to me -- priceless.

I'm blown away by what many of you pay for your gorgeous pieces, and I'm truly in love with this hobby where even a nickel that is worth a nickel can cause excitement.

Congrats to your granddaughter on the find. That is one of the coolest things about coin collecting, when you find something "neat" in pocket change. Last year I found a Roosie with a decent doubled edge. I also set aside any coins I find which have been through a rough life: corroded, painted on one side, etc. I've got one Jefferson which is corroded and also bloated; not sure how someone managed that.
