I think these were a steal.

    1

I just bought 2 hobby boxes from this guy at $48.00 each.

  • Those are retail boxes.
  • I hate to tell you Zef that those were retail boxes. One less auto per box!

Still not a bad price though considering the retail packs are $2.99 each. You would have to pay $60 to get the same amount of packs from blaster boxes.

Ah yes. So I saved $12 per box as apposed to buying more blasters. At least I am assured 1 auto as apposed to my recent 5 blaster box purchase with 0 autos. Not as good a deal as I thought...but better than my previous purchase

I bought a near box (think 23 packs) of the baseball tonight from target (no blaster boxes), and WOW, what collation!

Not a *single* duplicate, and just need 6 cards to complete the base set.

2 cards 3'd to 299 (Denny McLain and Johnny Pesky).

The base set extends to #142 (barry bonds) right?

    Cards I need:

    26
    35
    87
    123
    135
    138

If anyone has them I'd be willing to buy them. Thanks!

The skinny on Fan Favorites - Hobby cases (8 boxes) are going for $650, $81.25/box.
This looks like another well structured mid-range issue from Topps. They really have the idea about collector's needs. Pack the boxes with inserts so that buyers do not feel ripped off. Box loaders are great. With the base set to 150 you don't waste a lot of money.

For you football fans, watch for Topps 50th Anniversary Football at the end of July. Word has it that they are loading it up to celebrate the 50th issue of Topps FB.

I just picked up two hobby boxes yesterday ($95.00 per), and will break them this weekend. The classic designs are what peaked my interest in the set - I'll post some scans of what I get later this weekend.

IMO, retail seems the way to go. $2.50 a pack as opposed to $4-5. Odds are a little longer, but autos are still not too hard to pull, and are the type of autos that you will likely pull worth the extra $$$ to guarantee that you'll get them?

Just be careful with the blaster boxes - 8 packs - I got lucky last yr with them - this yr I bought 2 boxes of FB and yielded 1 auto - which isn't bad but someone bought 4 boxes and got zero. The set is nice but I really like the autos!

Anyone else notice differences in the checklist on the Topps site and the actual cards? I saw several in just the 7 packs that I picked up at Target.
  • My wife and I picked up one blaster box last night. We had fun busting it, pulled a Lemke auto and nothing else of note. It was nice that out of the 8 packs there were no duplicates.

I've opened 40 retail packs and only pulled a Dale Murphy auto. Everything else has been base cards. Neat cards and I'm sure I'll buy more.

Are there any SP's in this set?

I picked up a hobby box at the local card shop today and nearly completed the set. There are 144 cards in the hobby box and I picked up 140 of the 142 base cards. The other 4 were:

    Mike Norris Chrome 125/299
    Edgar Martinez Chrome 073/299
    Roger Craig Autograph
    Tony Gwynn Autograph

There was also a box loader:

Best Seat in the House Tiger Stadium Seat

All in all, this was a cool box to rip and I love the fact that I only need two cards to complete the base. **cough 27 and 110 cough***

Ya did good!!! Congrats on the Gwynn!!! Scan?
I bought 3 booster boxes - 60 bucks - got 2 autos - no one to write home about!
I went to the hobby store near my house - no product.

I will be buying more - I love the autos! If I get those numbers, I will ship them out to you. Right now, no got.

  • I bought my first packs today, nothing exciting but I did get an auto. It's also no one to write home about (MGR Jim Leyland) but it is #'d 10/10. I'm assuming its a gold or something of the sort? /Shrug image

If you haven't thrown out your wrappers, you will see on the back what the odds are of pulling the auto.

Scan? Congratulations! I would like to get one of the triple signed cards! Thank you.

    Thanx for sharing

I'm headin out for more this week! I've got to beat last year's Yount SP auto pull! I have been snake bit for about 18 months!!!!

  • I was about to jump off that ledge I was just talking about. 3 blasters and I didn't get anything until the second to last pack in the 3rd box.

editted to add: In one of the boxes I bought EVERY card in the box had one of the corners dinged. Think I should send them to topps or just see if I can make me set without them and leave it at that?

    That Killibrew card is serious!

On the dinged corners - I would return them out of principle.

    mike
    Mike
  • Thanks Stone. I think I will send them back. Do they exchange auto's that are messed up as well? Kinda figure I'm stuck with it but I've never tried sending anything back so I don't know. It's the #'d auto thats messed up. The other two are fine.

    PS:

Axtell, if you haven't found the cards you are looking for I have 2 that you need. LMK

Okay - 2 hobby boxes broken, I was going to provide scans but can't at the moment...

    Daryl Strawberry auto
    Bill Freehan auto
    Jim Leyland auto
    Davey Johnson auto

3 Chrome cards - the best of the bunch was Yogi Berra...

2 relic cards - Willie McGee Bat, and Gary Carter Bat.

I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed - and probably won't buy more. The base cards are nice, but after one hobby box break, you pretty much have seen them all. I'll look for the blasters if they are cheap, but I think this was quite enough.

Notable cards were Mike Norris Auto and Barry Lyons Chrome.

Check out this Auction!!!! The price on this card is just nuts!
I'm not sure what's going on yet...shill or what....misinfo on what it is? Even if it's an SP, it's not worth that kind of money? Quien sabe?

  • Gotta be shills or someone misunderstanding what it is, imho. lol if not I hope my killebrew sales for that amount!

Yo se. It looks like 2 dudes duking it out.

I just realized I never shared my 2 box buy that I thought was a steal but was informed was not hobby boxes.

    image

Needless to say I was thrilled with my Freehan that isn't even worth 5 bucks

I suddenly remember why I stopped trying to like modern a few years ago.

If he would have started the bidding at 99 cents, he would have gotten some action.

But, if you really hate the common autos, please ship them to the "Stone" Institute! I understand he is doing a common collection!

i just noticed doing a search on ebay. the john elway auto's are rare and sell for around 275-300$ how rare are these? i havent even looked at this set this year. is Elway the biggest pull from this set?
  • Stone193Stone193 Posts: 24,407 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Hi Chris
I only bought a couple of booster boxes of FB and don't have a price guide yet on them but in general, I think people are spending too much on some of these autos. I can get an auto ball PSA/DNA for what some people are paying for HOF'ers!

    Just my take

    Nice card!
But not for that kind of money.

Orion has a Killibrew on ebay and it's up to 30 bucks - I didn't pay that much for his ball with a stickered PSA/DNA COA!!!

This stuff is just crazy! Now, I am doing the common list portion of the set - and I'm going to see if I can trade with guys here for heritage SP's, chromes and stuff. Heck, I can even throw in some nice early 80's star cards!

    Is that your card?
I would put it up and hype the crap out of it!

Yeah Mike, lmk too. If ctsox doesn't have it, I have I think the base set and mucho doubles. These modern cards are new to me, but I am guessing there are better boxes for me to buy to kick off my newest bad habit. Any thoughts are not only appreciated but welcomed!

    Thanx guys
I'll LYK when I collate what I need. I've got a bunch of the common autos bookmarked - I picked one up for 3 bucks this week. Maybe I'll get lucky.

If anyone doesn't want their common autos LMK and I'll try to arrange a trade - I have plenty of good stuff to trade that's just collecting dust.

in the retail boxs I pulled a Ron Bloomberg auto...

so all in all I wasnt to happy...

I think the investment in this set is ending there, It was more the excitment of the opening the packs ( I missed that part of it)...seeing the cards with the little gold stamp and realizing I have the real thing kinda feels wierd.

The Link below will take you to the PSA Boards 1952 Set Build, I also have made 5 slideshows each slideshow is 100 cards long, card numbers 1-99,100-199,200-299,300-399, and 400-407

Are you sure that was a hobby box? You should have definitely gotten 2 autos in a hobby box, I haven't read a break of this product yet without them. You might want to contact Topps customer service and see what they will do for you (they have been great in the past).

I think I'm cutting myself off on these, since I got the 2 players I most idolized as a kid - pulled a Brooks Robinson refractor 280/299, and a Gary Carter auto. (I was a weird kid, okay?) But I still need a bunch of base cards, and have a bunch of doubles/triples of other base cards, so I'll probably be looking to trade to make the base set. image

Wow a complete set of autos? That's nuts. The Elway is the only one I'd really want...though I love this set. I am going to try to complete this base set and chrome set, then be done.
