2005 Topps Fan Favorites BB break- I'm addicted...

This is how they suck you in. 18 packs:

Fan Favorites

The Ryan refractor is /299 and the Pignatano is /25. I wish it was reversed but I guess I can't complain.

Those are nice cards! As a fan of the 1979 set, I like the Ozzie also...thanks for sharing the pix.

  • I love that Ozzie card. Got outbidded on one of those last night.

    That Ozzie is sweet.

Only one auto / box though? I thought there was two?

There were only 18 packs left in the box of 24, so the other one probably went in one of those 6 packs.

You are exactly right Lee. I bought quite a few FB fan favs. Firstly because I like the cards but another reason is the first 3/4 box I bought at target yeilded a nice auto of Joe Greene. I easily bought more then double what it's worth since then and have gotten nothing exciting. Still nice cards though, and fun image.

Have you found these retail yet or just at a card shop?

I usually buy them at Target and did not see any this weekend...my wife did buy me a booster 20$ box of FB fan favorite and I pulled an auto card of Dent.

    image

Last year I got pretty lucky and pulled an auto in every booster box I purchased except 1.

I got mine at a card shop for $4.50/pack.

Is the MSRP on these cards really $5 a pack this year? Wal-Marts got 'em for $2.97 a pack and $20 for a booster box of eight. Not that I really need to get into any more new cards, but I was just wondering...

Found a box of the football too at the target here, but no baseball...and the local card shop has no baseball either.

I want that Dent!!! Nice card. I'm going to have to look for one of those.

A couple of questions about the fan favorite football cards:

How many are done in the 85 style?

And how many years have they been done?

    Thanks!
  • LodiLodi Posts: 78
I love the Fan Favorites, I use them for TTM (through the mail) autographs. So far I've gotten Karl Mecklenberg, Steve Grogan, Gary Larsen, Ken Stabler, Richard Dent, Charlie Joiner, Joe Delamielleure, and this guy.................
    image

The only 85 design I see is Dent.
  • So has anyone found any of the baseball in any retail outlets yet?
  • frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,098 ✭✭✭✭✭
Can someone explain what these cards are?

Why did they have to put that goofy extended border on the football fan favorite cards with the text in them? Why did they not do it like the baseball were it was just like the actual card?

It's a retro set that includes a lot of the players that are "local" heroes as well as HOF'ers. They will feature players which you would normally not even remember till you read the card - they may throw in a guy who had one good season for a team and then was a bust? If you are in between sets and want something easy to collect - this is the set - it is usually very small and the collation within boxes is very good.

There are a lot of autos to be pulled and with baseball last year, I did pretty well.

    image

This was my best pull last year - it was an SP auto Yount.

I haven't seen the booster boxes at Target yet - here is the checklist from the Topps web.

If I pulled a Dr. James Beckett auto I would throw up right there on the spot. Then I would rip it up and throw it away. Then I would burn the trashcan and maybe burn down the house that the trashcan was in.

Keep a close eye on Target Zef
They will be there - I will be interested to see what everyone pulls.

BTW, I stole this from cornholio - I think he was finished with her! image

Good luck to those who buy some boosters.

I got suckered into the Fan Favorites also. I decided to get the base set for a binder. I've picked up four retail 7+1 boxes. I'm still 30 odd cards from the base set, but I have snagged these beauties.

I thought my luck on Heritage was bad! You just joined my club but with Fan Favorite - sorry to hear about that - on the Topps web, they are stating that the full boxes (don't know if that's hobby) have two autos per box.

    Again sorry about your luck

    ArchStanton,
What were the odds on that Elway chrome?

  • ArchStantonArchStanton Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭
Mark, I am not sure of the odds, but it is numbered 234/299. I think there is also a gold refractor that is more limited.

p.s. I can only assume that you will be wearing black tomorrow in honor of the great Myron Cope's retirement announcement today.

Is he a sports reporter or something in the Pittsburg area? I remember when I was a kid living in Steubenville, OH a guy who had an interesting voice - kind of indentifiable like Howard Cossell - perhaps he did play by play on the radio for the pirates? Or something like that? At the same time, the pirates had this really dry announcer - Bob Prince (?) - he did have one saying I liked - when a ball was hit on the ground to the outfield - on the astroturf - he would say: "well, we got a bug loose on the rug" - pretty good stuff. This brings back good memories anyway - but not sure about Myron?

  • Myron Cope does (or did) the Steelers games on radio. Definately a "one of a kind" voice..........
  • I picked up the three 7+1s from Shopko. No autos and more doubles than cards for a set...ouch.

I've always liked Topps Fan Favorites & was inspired by this thread, so I went to Target on my lunch and purchased the last blaster box. Not bad - out of eight packs I pulled a Joe Pignatano (Dodgers catcher) autograph and a Brooks Robinson 1/1 Yellow Press Plate. As always, the base cards are very cool & I really want the Elway autograph.

    Jim and Mike,
To follow up on Myron Cope he also patented the 'Terrible Towel' and coined the phrase, 'The Immaculate Reception'. So all you non-Steelers fans probably LOVE this guy!

  • This is a great set for TTM autos. I attempted to get one of every signed from the '04 set TTM and got about half of the 150 cards. Anyone else on the boards do TTM autos?
  • I went to the local Target earlier today to see if they had FF Baseball. They didn't so I picked up two boxes of FF Football. Each box had an autograph of Marty Lyons (Jets). So if your Autograph collection is lacking Marty Lyons I am the man to see image. Seriously, I will part with one of these if someone needs it.

I did the 2001 and 2002 Archives auto set, but when the 2003's came out I started losing interest. It seemed that everything was going to remain the same with the same SP's and SP signers and a slew of marginal players and Topps was going to ride this horse til it dropped. I still love the idea of the cards, but its more fun chasing down the originals

You guy's peaked my interest in this set , so I drove to ShopKo , and they had the Booster Box's for $19.99 a box ( 7 packs plus a free one ) ! Bought two box's ! First box I pulled a 1969 Topps auto of Jerry Grote and got the Elway regular card that several of you mentioned about ! Secound Box was a disappointment , as I got the same cards duplicated , except for one new base card , and a 1983 Topps auto of Rick Dempsey ! So I have 47 cards to trade ! I guess I should be happy that I got two auto's out of 16 packs ! .........Robbieimage
