Grading Results / Salada coins and 1960's

Just got my results. These submissions origionally arrived at PSA on May 6th but were delayed in being posted as received because I didn't separate the cards from the coins. So after I gave permission to mail them back separately, they were posted on May 31st, graded today. Overall, I am very pleased. All the Salada coins were bought on ebay within the past year and the cards were picked up from a dealer at the Gibralter Trade Center (Michigan) this winter.

    Jay,
I know the 10's will probably never be worth more than now but I think I'll keep them along with the 9's for my collection. I'll sell the 8's on ebay.

Up inside the thumb reason why i ask is there used tobe or is a cardshop in that area. They sold vintage on ebay 52-56's back about 4 yrs ago some unreal stuff. Lost the name of the biz wondering if you knew what I was talkin about.

I'm not aware of that dealer, sounds like I missed a great seller on my on turf. OUCH!

I think I know that guy. I can't remember his name either. although for some reason I think it's 'Scott'. If it's the guy I'm thinking of I bought a bunch of beautiful 30's-60's boxing and golf cards from him (all European makes) at Gibraltar about a year ago.

PSARich-- Did you score those coins at Gibraltar? There are a bunch of guys there that have these, but I've always been leery of buying them-- mostly because I don't know what to look for when it comes to grading them.

    Boo:

Yup same guy he was selling that stuff on ebay about 4-6 yrs ago. Man he had some nice 52's,56's. I purchased many 56's that made 8' and the 52's just had unreal gloss couple dings here and there tons of 7's. He ran some of that golf stuffl they looked nice as well. That rings a bell the cards from ebay all had a foil sticker over the cardsaver with his name. You think I would have saved one (dummy). Anyhow you from mi as well. Ive heard the gibralter is good Im over here on the westside.

On a side note anyone have some 74tt nrmmtt+ for trade or sale.

Who was the dealer at Gibraltar you got those cards from? I know most of the vintage dealers who set up there. There are some nice cards to be had there, I've found some beauties too.

The coins were all purchased on ebay from two different sellers. One guy sold about 200 1962 Saladas over 2-3 weeks. Never saw anything from him again.

    A761506:
Don't know his name, he was from out of state...I think Ohio. I've only seen him there twice but I only go about every three months. He had lots of vintage baseball but had to negoiate to get below Beckett prices.I paid about 75-85% book but I had a good feeling they were at least 8's with a good chance at 9. I bought a beautiful 1956 Mays from him for $170 that I thought was NM+ with 50-50 centering and great color and gloss. After I got home I found a small front wrinkle that I missed. That's always the difficulty with buying raw vintage cards at shows. The lighting is not always good and even with a magnifer I missed it. However, its a beautiful card to look at!

    A76-

Do you know Ernie? He's a Cleveland dealer that sets up almost every month. I haven't seen him in a while, and I'm wondering if something happened to him.

    Ernie doesn't ring a bell...sorry.

The name Ernie doesn't ring a bell off-hand. I do know several of the dealers who come up from Ohio. What show were you at (Mt Clemens or Gibraltar) and where was he set up? They usually always are at the same table from show to show. I'm always scared to buy expensive cards raw at that show, as I know several of the dealers that do not-so-ethical things with some of their cards.
  • Ernie is fine. I saw him at the last Mt. Clemens show. He was not set up, just looking around. Things are slow right now, so some of the regular vintage guys are taking in different shows or a break for the summer. Plus he is at Gibraltar Taylor at times also.

"...as I know several of the dealers that do not-so-ethical things with some of their cards."

Really? LOL, I think I know who you're talking about.

Re: altered cards. If you buy anything from Terry make sure you really look it over. As you probably know he bought that mammoth collection a while ago, and while I don't think he trims anything I can say without a doubt that some of the cards in that collection he bought were hacked on. I have a '58 Phillies team card that turned out to be 1/16" short, and a couple others as well. He has (or had) a '63 Ditka that was just gorgeous, but upon closer inspection about 1/16" had been taken off the bottom... So, if you see anything in his display that looks too good to be true be sure to measure them up.

On the flip side, I scored some beautiful '60's hockey from him that graded very high.

I have a couple of red bordered/ red backed Salada coins of Willie Tasby and Joe MCclain of the Senators. They are in nm-mt condition on the McClain (maybe a psa 9 mint) and the Tasby has a bit of a lip where his picture meets the plastic. No nicks or dents or scratches.

A reasonable offer via pm gets em. I was going to submit them but PSA takes a really long time whenever I submit coins and I only have these two and do not want to hold them for a year until I get more.
