New (Old) Gold Arrivals

Attended an auction late last week and picked up some nice coins, here are some initial quick pics.

Will add more through out the day but this is my favourite to begin with.

  • If Emperor Oli see's that you'll have a new best friend! image

It's one heck of a coin and i don't collect proofs! George IV coins are certainly something special.

    Bloody right!

I think this bust struck in gold really does it justice: the hair especially! This is my favourite Wyon portrait (even over the Victorian issues) and one of the best reverse shields, skillfully executed by Merlen.

I have a question: is it me or is there something a bit kerazy going on around the bottom-right of the obverse rim? It could just be the way it's photographed (looks slightly angled) or manipulated, but it looks a bit odd.

If you've got any more second busts, post them up quickly! image

^^ That's my only 1826 coin, and my most treasured!

Oli i'm almost certain that the bottom right rim on the obverse is due to the photography (i've found the same happens when i scan coins) sometimes you can see the edge of the coin. Which is what you're seeing there.

As much as i am fond of Wyon's George IV obverse (and i once tried to do the 1826 set myself... well what have i not tried?) but i'm afraid i like the William IV obverse the most. (I like your shilling too it reminds me of the one i used to have, except yours is in far better grade than mine was).

To the original poster Cruzi, is this a one off piece for your set or are you compiling a George IV or sovereign type set?

Its my photography, not much has been done to these apart from cropping them and reducing them to a size that poor little dial-uppers like me can view.

Sylvestius, I'm doing a sovereign type set, also doing a few half sovs as well. This is my first foray earlier than Viccy and am pretty impressed so far. There was a proof crown with this portrait as well at the auction but I got outbid for it . image

Edited to add, there was also a proof 5 pound there but it was out of reach for my budget, but a very impressive coin. image

    I'm a dialer-upper too! You're not ALONE! image

Geo IV crown hey? Whowhoo, bad luck being outbid on one of those! They're not everyday occurences.

Sovereign type set, hmm my favourite was always the Victorian shield reverse sovereigns, i just think the wreath around the shield adds something. I used to have a UNC 1871 shield sovereign. Nice coin it was too, but it was slabbed so i had to let it go.

I must admit i've never owned any pre-Victorian gold (by that i mean gold sovereigns) cos i've had half guineas and stuff. But George IV/William IV always struck me as nice coins.

How far will you be going with the set, George III-??? Elizabeth II young head, Machin head or right upto the modern stuff? Watch out for 1937 and 1989 they might prove a tad difficult to get hold of (unless you've already got them of course!)

When i collected sovereigns, or tried to, i was attempting to put together a date set of London mint shield reverse coins. Proved a bit too big in the end for me to cope with.

Half sovereigns i always liked, i nearly had a full George V London mint set, i only had the 1911 and 1915 to get. Come to think of it i don't think i've ever stuck to a set... image

  • The George IV £5 coin is probably the nicest milled English gold coins of all time, bar one. The proof Vicky shield reverse sovereigns! As you can tell there's a series i like.

Although i must admit i'm partial to George II gold coinage too. In fact most early milled gold coins get me running around like an overexcited squirrel. image
  • With the Sovs I'm attempting a type set of every obverse/reverse/mint from George III to present day, no George VI sovs as yet , there was a set at the auction but it was edge bruised and marked so did not try for them.

Have got a fair way down the track and have also upgraded a few here and there but it is quite challenging, not to mention wallet draining.

The half sovereigns, I seem to have fallen into a British proof type set, having the 1937 and 1887 ones already and picking up the 1839 and 1893 at the auction. image

Aaah, the proof half sovereigns. I too had an incomplete type set of these until a year or two ago, 1893 (went to lordmarcovan and ajaan later), 1902 (from Steve Fenton), 1911,1937 (nice cameo),1989,2000,2002 that I had bought from Spink mainly as nFDC-FDC. I sent them to PCGS for grading prior to selling, and all got PR64 and above ,with or without CAM,except the 1902 that got a PR62, they were really nice coins .Cosmic bought the 1902 and then he invited me to join the Darkside, so something good came out of this sale. image

Currently looking for a choice/gem unc 1901 full sov London mint to complete my set.

That 1826 is a great coin!
