The Darkside has changed my attitude on coin competition

I started the Lite-side registry frenzy a few years back with a proof Sac. set. Then I found the Darkside. While wandering in the Dark, I completed a proof Ike,a1976 proof set, 2/3 proof SBA, and have gotten about 1/3 of the way through a 1943 MS set. I had great fun working on and completing these sets. But the desire to register them has faded away. That is not to say that I will never register them, but not at this time.
The beauty and the hunt for Dark-side coins are what really fuels my fire. That is the direction that my Lite-side collection is headed in now. The individual coin is the important thing and not where it places numerically on a list.

So let`s all bow and give thanks to The Great and Imperial Dark-side. A place of mystery and true power image

Aah, the Registry stuff and a little friendly competition between fellow collectors can be fun sometimes. It has its place. But it certainly ain't what it's all about. In the long run, collecting is an individual endeavour.

It is nice to be able to share the fruits of one's efforts with like-minded folks, however.

Maybe I just made myself a sigline quote, huh?

I thought up that little line as an encouragement to novice diggers on the Metal Detecting Forum, who might get discouraged when they see somebody else finding great stuff like colonial coins, while they might be finding nothing but trash or maybe Wheat pennies at best. I wanted to advise them to measure their success against their own goals, not against what other people were finding. Sometimes it's easy to lose sight of that, in collecting as in metal detecting.

The metal detecting philosophy, as it is practiced among the folks on this site, has a lot in common with Darkside coin philosophy, really. We on the MD Forum are more into cheering each other on than outdoing each other, though we do have the monthly awards for best finds.

The British collection has been the only constant in my life, other interests come and go, but I have always been interested in my British collection. I have no desire for competition with others (most of the time), I am just looking for coins that speak to me.

The Registry is a competition only if the collector makes it a competition. Coin collecting should be a adventure that one can explore for profound relaxation. When it turns into something else a more relaxing endeavor should be found.

Coins are cool. Both liteside and darkside.

Oh yea, I have a number 2 rated Registry Set with PCGS. What does that mean ? Not a darn thing because I know that probably 150 other sets that are together are better. The number 2 is just a number and nothing else.

    Cheers.

    How true!!

Coinrookie, we're really glad you have been able to find more enjoyment in numismatics. It's indeed supposed to be fun, and we try to enjoy ourselves over here. Too bad that the Lightside has so many negative sides; it doesn't HAVE to be that way over there, and I hope it doesn't ever get that way over here.

The darkside hasn't changed my attitude on coin competition -- I've always hated it, and that's why I'm a darksider. With few exceptions, the registry set competitions are more about who's got the bigger bank account rather than who can pick the best coins. It's all about rich collectors and dealers driving up the prices of the good coins to get the No. 1 set. Very few people seem to be trying to discover fresh coins and build sets from them.

That's what I like about the darkside. I can find interesting and rare coins that cost only a fraction of the value of the overpriced U.S. issues, and build a collection that can truly be an object of pride, because it involves real work to locate and identify choice, original coins. It takes more than just a signature on a checkbook to find some darkside coins, regardless of their value, because they are that rare in nice condition.
