Hi,
One of my personal favorites from the Roman Republic… Marius.
Marius was Julius Caesar’s uncle thru marriage, pretty much the creator the Roman Armies, 7 times Consul of Rome, and arguably the greatest General of his time.
One great story is… as he and Sulla battled each other, at one point Sulla’s men captured Marius by throwing a rope around his neck and pulling him from a marsh by his throat; he was about 60 years old at the time. The soldiers were all afraid to fight him so, after confining Marius to a hut, they sent in a slave, armed with a sword to execute Marius however; he Marius was such an intimidating warrior that he stared down the slave, while unarmed, and said “you dare try to kill Marius!” the slave ran out.
The soldiers, either out of fear or respect, exiled Marius. However, he later joined forces with Cinna (Julius Caesar married Cinna’s daughter Cornelia) and together they re-took Rome, and in a bloodbath, killed all of Sulla’s comrades, and Marius was named consol for the 7th time.
He died a few days later.
Another cool note is… when Sulla returned to Rome… he confronted the young Julius Caesar and was so impressed by Caesars stare of defiance said “there are many Mariuses in his eyes!”
Gaius Marius 157-86 BC (T. Cloulius Moneyer, Rome mint 98 BC, Refers to Marius' victories over the Teutones and Ambrones at Aquae Sextiae in 102 B.C. and the Cimbri at Vercellae in 101 B.C.) the coin is about the size of a US dime and far shaper when viewed in hand
