newest additions: Dionysos

Hi,

This one I picked up a week or two ago…. It’s Dionysos, Greek god of fertility, wine, vegetation, pleasures & civilization, 148-100 BC bronze, Maroneia Greek city on Aegean see After 148 BC Silver tetradrachm.

The interesting part is… most who look at the coin, specifically the reverse, seem to wonder if the ancient Greeks were depicting an alien!

Most likely not however; nearly everyone I show the coin to says that.

Nice tetradrachm. They style on these can get pretty crude even before you factor in the Celtic imitations. I don't believe I've ever heard the "alien" idea before though. image
