I hate to say it, but I don't see much there that's worth cracking out.

everything 7 or below is worth more raw.

I wouldn't mind the results so much if I hadn't hand picked the best cards out of 3 nice sets and wrote "NO QUALIFIERS PLEASE" all over the submission forms.

    I need an eye exam!

My Bad-- I thought you were looking to resubmit.

I've had some of these 'results from hell' submissions myself, so I feel your pain.
  • SDavidSDavid Posts: 1,584 ✭✭
This is why I keep my submissions to Cali and Texas around the 20 card mark.

Sure, they can still screw me, but only for so much and only for so long!
  • RipkenRipken Posts: 559 ✭✭✭
If you wrote 'no qualifiers please' and they still gave you qualifiers, you have a legitimate gripe. Get on the phone & let 'em know they screwed up. They might give you credit which you could at least use on another submission. Grading is too expensive to let that stuff slide.
  • kingraider75kingraider75 Posts: 1,500 ✭✭
you can ask PSA not to give you qualifiers??? How does that work? I thought the grader makes the call on whether it's going to be an 8OC or 7 straight or whatever.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
  • Nice pick on the Pinder and Stappleton though on the 74 WHA. That set is a real pain to find centered.

I think i may be able to explain the MC on the 1977-78 OPC WHA hockey. It may end up being one of the toughest hockey sets to build.
The printed in Canada sign on the back of the cards is almost always partially cut off , in the case of the Howe it is usually on the top of the card(not the bottom where it is supposed to be). The 1977-78 WHA set is very easy to find and i had opened some boxes about 15 years ago. I went through those cards last year and while the fronts looked perfect that printed in canada sign was almost always cut off.

When you say "worth more raw" I am assuming you are talking about resale - selling them to someone who thinks they are in better condition than PSA thought - am I correct?

If you indicate "no qualifiers" on the submission form, they will grade without using them. That means if a card is o/c or miscut, that's put into the equation. A PSA 9 o/c is then usually a PSA 7 or 8.

    Dude,

You just learned a tough lesson on how rough those early hockey cards can be. If you look through some of my sets, you'll see that I had to conquer the o/c and several other OPC challenges. High end cards are tough to locate throughout the decade.

Once Bob's cards get added to the pop report the average will be that almost 50% of the cards submitted for 1977-78 WHA come back with a qualifier

Thanks to Randy I understand the 77 MC's as I just looked through the remainder of the set. Approximately 80% are cut straight thru the copyright line on the reverse. Now if this is so common with the 77's why isn't this taken into consideration when grading cards from this set?

As for the 74 OC's I just didn't expect qualifiers when I hand picked the cards from the set (checking centering first) and requested no qualifiers. There must be a small quirk with these much like the 77 copyright line that warranted the OC's. I could care less about the grade (8 OC or a 6) neither will go into my graded sets. I just wish I knew why they were OC when I picked centered cards.

Mark- relax man. "everything 7 or below is worth more raw." What I meant by this and maybe I should have phrased it differently is when I build graded sets I build nice ones. I have no use for 7's or below from these years and if I sold the slabs on the bay I would be lucky to get the grading fee back. My reference to cracking them is to return them to my raw set not "selling them to someone who thinks they are in better condition than PSA thought". Maybe my phrase should have been "everything 7 or below is more valuable to me raw". I don't rip people off so don't worry about it. As a matter of fact I only sell slabs which I have upgraded or do not need for my registry. I don't sell raw at all.

I'm very happy with the 72 OPC's which I only picked out a couple because I haven't started my 72 OPC registry set yet. I must have missed something on the ORR/Park.

The 72 Topps I expected better as some came from Mr. Mint's wax pack which I busted and put straight into card savers. They seem to have averaged 7. I was hoping for 9's for my registry.

Lesson learned: The next time I have $450.00 bucks to spend on grading. I'm going to the nudie bar instead. Who's in? image

    Thanks, Bob

    OK
My 2 submissions, one with 12 cards and another with 14 cards are received a day earlier than Bob's and his are done and my are not? This is what I don't get? Should it not be first in first out? Did Bob pay more money than I? Is Bob's money greener? Somebody help me understand this? Please!

    Jackstraw,

That is what really frustrates me too. My submission was entered as received on May 16 and I am still waiting. I see others post their grades from submissions from the same special and for a similar numbers of cards that they sent in weeks after me. Basically I have to conclude that PSA simply plays by a random system that obviously is unfair. If you call to find out where your sub. stands, you simply hear "they are in grading". Well, mine have been in grading 25 days now and nada. I have other subs. waiting to go but I will not send them until I see these results first. Ugh!!!

Sorry to see that your expectations differed from the grades you received. I learned the lesson the hard way as well. You need to get a better handle on the grading standards. Do you have a decent magnification loupe? Are you measuring centering? "Eyeballing" is not the same as grading. Regards.
