Whats going on with this Jersey Quarter?

There is a die crack on the obverse too.

That texturing runs around the whole coin in a band just like in the photo.

What you see is die erosion. However, for a modern strike, this is really severe.

LDS or late die state---Heavy die erosion which is common on copper nickel alloy coins due to the hardness and abraisive nature fo the alloy.

    Yep, die errosion.

To many people this makes the coin a "cull." One local dealer, who bought some bags of state quarters so that he would have some to sell in the shop in future years, used to weed coins like this out and spend them. But who knows? Maybe they will be declared "mint errors" and end up selling for a premium? imageimage

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
