It's one of those pieces that is not worth a great deal more than melt.

I noticed that the mintmark looks particularly bold for a coin with that amount of wear. Am I just imagining that?

Look at the overall surfaces, which have no luster, and the extensive wear on the Indian's face and forehead and the eagle's wing. This coin has only VF sharpness. Pull out one of your Mint State pieces and see how much detail is missing from this coin.
Please don't take offense. I'm just trying to help you here.
Luster is a very important factor when comes to assigning grades like AU or even EF-45 (there should be traces of it at that level). And you need to consider the main grading areas that I mentioned. They catch the wear first, most of the time.

Guess VF Little better date
Exactly...and luster is even more important in this series. No luster = definite downgrade. No way this is AU.
I agree with VF-25.
Chicolini: Mint? No, no, I no like a mint. Uh - what other flavor you got?

There is too much detail for a lower vf grade, in my opinion.
In general, doesn't this series suffer from mushy strikes?
