I concur - #1 looks best, and I'm guessing is most accurate as well.
#2 looks washed out and masks the flaws. It also doesn't really show anything that cannot be seen in #1, except perhaps to show possible carbon spots. Is this one with diffused lighting?
I will make it a unanimous #1. The diffuse lighting used in #2 sometimes brings out more colors, but does not give any accurate idea of what the coin actually looks like. K6AZ had a good thread on this earlier today I believe.
Neither picture is probably a exact representation of the piece. The colors in #1 are probably too bright unless the light were to hit the coin at a certain angle. #2 is without a doubt too dull. Still I agree with the others and would select #1 as the better shot.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I agree #1 is the better image of the two. I just can't seem to talk myself out of seeing the difused lighting shot because it brings the color and pattern out better.
I have been spending some time working on my imaging, and starting to reshooot my entire collection.
This is the type of coin where I'd use both pictures... show the pattern/color, and show the lustre. On some coins, the color and lustre can be combined in one shot... when they can't, just use both

Frankly, I'd prefer a picture WITHOUT the fingerprint, though.
