Fire sale: Dealer or Sleazebay

dorkbardorkbar Posts: 427 ✭✭✭
I need to sell a few decent specimens. Getting a bit tired of not getting adequate prices on Sleazebay. (I know, I know, it's sleazebay and ya get what ya get.) Is there an answer to the question of whether a legitimate dealer typically would pay more for a decent coin than the return one might see on Sleazebay? Or is it all a crap shoot, depends on the coin, etc?

Thanks.

Depends on the coin, but you might want to try the BST board here.

It most certainly depends on the coin. A dealer who doesn't normallly stock something and doesn't instantly know how he/she's going to resell it isn't going to be an aggressive buyer.

What are you looking to sell? Maybe someone could recommend a dealer who would be a good match.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

In my experience, no dealer will pay anywhere near what I get on eBay for most coins.

Nothing too out of the ordinary--1892 Barber Dime MS-65, 1885-CC Morgan MS-64, that sort of stuff.

if I'm not mistaken- both coins are NOT ordinary- at least in the grade you state- I would be interested to see the 85CC and pm me your ask price.

Personally, if I had those coins, I'd sell them outright to the right dealer long before I'd list them on Ebay. One recommendation that I can give is Gary Adkins, a PNG dealer from Edina, Minnesota. The name of his company is Numismatics Services, Inc. (NSI). Those kind of coins are in his wheelhouse and he's an absolute straight arrow. I've sold him a lot of nice coins and have been well satisfied with the prices paid.

Yea, I'd give the Buy-Sell board a try, although I've only gotten responses there and no sales.

I can always use properly graded coins like the 1885-CC, but you must remember that I need to re-sell it at a show, so asking the "Coins Value" price won't work at least not for me. Keep the Gray Sheet in mind and remember you are not paying the sleaze-bay posting and sales fees. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I would suggest Darin Whittaker who is BigD5 on here. I have tried BST and always end up with Darin.

He's good. He pays fast. He doesn't dink around.

Every deal I have done with him has been VERY satisfactory.

You may consider consigning to David Lawrence, I have done well, with coins that I could not get a fair price for, on Ebay.

how fast do you need money?

    can you take good photos?

may consider teletrade or heritage if 4 months is soon enough

At least on eBay you don't have to endure the "badmouthing" of your coins.
