POLL: Grade on my New Purchase Capped Bust Quarter - PCGS GRADE REVEALED

Here are images of my just ordered Capped Bust Quarter. I think it looks very nice... Bust Quarters are hard to come by without that cleaned look. I paid a moderate amount above sheet price for the coin, but I think it was justified, particularly when I compare this coin to others of the same grade.

Above the eagle's left wing looks a little funky in the image. The verbal I got on the phone said there was no problem there, just toning. I look forward to seeing the coin in hand.

(Corrected to Capped not Draped... ooops!)

Hard to tell from the pic....it's covered in a thick coat of Original. image

I went with 55, but wouldn't be surprised if it was MS either.

I personally would hesitate to call that coin 100% "original" - it's decent though. I would guess AU.

The eye appeal is fantastic, it looks original to me. I really would need better pictures to see the fields to see if they are "marky" or not. I think I see a touch of a rub, so I will go AU-58, but with better pictures, I could easily go MS-64.

The tone around the left obverse stars is what appears slightly funky to me.

Looks like a bigger bird got in a fight with this eagle and ripped out part of its wing.

She has some wear on her upper curls below LIBERTY, the lower bust seems to be a bit soft, and there appears to be a spec of wear on the eagle's lt. wingtip (the viewer's rt). The coin has really nice surfaces. I'd also guess an AU 55, though it may have gotten a slight bump to a 58 because of the attractive rim toning. It may have been dipped and retoned, but I think it's an attractive coin. Hope it looks even better in hand!

I really like the coin. Very nice pickup. I'd like to see higher resolution shots when you get it in hand. Thanks for sharing...Mike

Very nice Capped Bust, Brian. Start building a set that looks like that!

Keep 'em coming. Bed time here. I'll post the grade in the morning (7-8 hours from now), and give a full assessment after I receive the coin. Nothing like rotating under the light and getting a good look with a loop to examine a coin.

I have some concern about marks in the left obverse field but my guess is PCGS 55.

Lotsa '38's are not needle-y sharp even MS. I guessed 60 without seeing better pix. Probly shouldn't have as I think PCGS starts at 61 an leaves 60 to NGC.

    After 62 votes

    2% VF35
    14% Low AU (50/53)
    59% High AU (55/58)
    8% Low MS (60/61/62)
    11% Mid MS (63/64)
    2% Hig MS (66)
    2% Proof

The coin today sits in an AU50 holder. From the pics, I think there is a touch of wear as El Contador said. It can also be seen on the gown just below and left of the clasp, plus at the top right corner of the shield. I think there are some light marks in the lower left obverse field and the top right reverse field. To me this has the eye appeal of a 63/64, and presuming it looks as good in hand, will be a nice addition to my type set.

That has got to be about as sweet as they come in AU50. Great pickup. I'm really coming to love these Bust quarters. I cracked out an 1838 for my set yesterday, though considerably not as nice a coin as that one. Enjoy that one when it arrives.

I agree. I figured it was a 58, but also half way expected you to say it was a 63.

Ha HA! I guessed correctly. I thought it would be holdered at that, but I agree that it looks better. I have a '31 BQ in a 50 holder that I think is way under-graded, so I can relate. Nice coin!
