Question from The MD Forum About Proof Sets

I'm looking at two 1954 proof sets, one is a flat pack and the other is a box set. The flat pack is still sealed, never opened. The box set was opened. Both of these sets have the same asking price of $175.00 and I don't understand why. Are any of you suavy enough to tell me why the sealed set is not valued higher?

Thanks Guys

There is a price difference between the Box Sets and the Flat Packs... I'm not sure exactly of the difference image

If the boxed set were sealed, the asking price would likely be $200 plus. Boxed sets tend to bring a premium over their flat pack counterparts. In this case, that premium is offset by the fact that it's opened and the flat pack isn't.

NO 1954 Proof sets were issued in a flat pack. Perhaps you meant to say 1955 Proof sets. If it is a 1954 Proof set in flat pack it is a private creation, NOT a mint creation.

If you meant to say 1955, the 1955 flat pack is now worth about 30% more than the box set. The reason, I believe is that most of the coins in the box set toned badly because of the plastic sleaves that held the coins. The silver often turned black in places, and that stuff does not dip off well. As a result the silver coins in the box sets are often pretty ugly image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Geez, Bill is right, and I'm asleep at the switch. There were no flat packs until mid way through 1955. So, if these really are 1954 sets, somebody is running a scam.

The only scam being run is the one on my mother when my brain was handed out! I did indeed mean to say 1955, NOT 1954! Thanks for all the information, I now understand the reason for the prcing of these 2 sets. Mary
