Question from The MD Forum About Proof Sets

I'm looking at two 1954 proof sets, one is a flat pack and the other is a box set. The flat pack is still sealed, never opened. The box set was opened. Both of these sets have the same asking price of $175.00 and I don't understand why. Are any of you suavy enough to tell me why the sealed set is not valued higher?
Thanks Guys

There is a price difference between the Box Sets and the Flat Packs... I'm not sure exactly of the difference

If you meant to say 1955, the 1955 flat pack is now worth about 30% more than the box set. The reason, I believe is that most of the coins in the box set toned badly because of the plastic sleaves that held the coins. The silver often turned black in places, and that stuff does not dip off well. As a result the silver coins in the box sets are often pretty ugly
