Guess the grade / What do you think? - NEW 5/31 UPDATE IN LAST POST

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,070 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just snagged this one, pretty cheaply I think. The images are the sellers, I will re-image and re-post when it is in hand. What do you think as far as condition and grade range? Thanks.

I agree with Ajaan - likely VF

  • I know nothing of these, but comparing to comprable GB, looks like a nice VF....

I see quite a bit of detail of the out reaching hands on the reverse?

    image
  • I would say VF

I like it but the photo makes it hard to offer an accurate grade. EF is possible and even likely if there is lustre and original fields

Not the best photo to judge from, but I will say EF-45 to AU-55.

Does anyone have one of these to put up photos for comparison?

From the picture, it looks like deeply toned surfaces that are probably a bit matte like. I think this has a good shot at being Choice AU and quite possibly UNC. I don't see any wear for the most part. The portrait looks pretty crisp.

    Nice coin.

XF Maybe Better. Hard to judge without the coin in hand. Nice coin!! Anything from that era from Romania is scarce. I have most of the minors and a 50 Bani from the teens.

Ok so the package from the guy that I bought the 2 Lei from arrived today. I was pretty excited to open it up, image it and show it off! Well.....inside the package was a friggin' Turkish 2 Zolota AH1171 !!!!!!!!!!!!! Un-fricken-believable. I've contacted the seller but have no response as of yet. I just hope who ever got my Romanian coin decides they don't want to keep it and they end up contacting the seller as well. Figures this crap would happen on a coin I've been searching forever for and not some common crapola coin. Will update again when I have more details. Ugh...

I am sorry to hear you recieved the wrong coin. I have a feeling someone else is disappointed too so there is some chance you may get the right coin at some point in the future

I think it's gonna be an EF or better coin (when and if you get it).

Mebbe you can do a guess-the-grade thread on the Philippine peso I sent you, if it ever gets there! image

The details look a solid XF-AU, VF on a bad day.. but that patina scares me. Can't say why exactly, just reminds me of other coins I've seen. The Krause 2 lei pic does have that same patina though, so I don't know.

A pic of my 1 leu is below (I really oughtta reimage this).. this design seems a lot like French sowers (or Italian steel) in that it can be tough to determine true condition from a pic. Also, if you're still on the market you might have better luck shooting for a 1 leu.. they're usually cheaper and more often in better condition. (Mine's a keeper though imageimage )

I'd have to go with VF from the picture. It looks like there is light wear over the entire coin to the point that the only luster that might be remaining would be under the dark toning in the protected areas of the devices, but not enough wear to begin flattening any details.

    Good luck recovering it.

Initially I would have said VF. In re-examining the image I don't see enough wear on the garment to justify VF, so I'll go XF.

The obverse doesn't look as sharp as the reverse (not uncommon) and might have been cleaned some time ago? Either way, nice coin!image

Well, the seller emailed me today and said that he failed to locate the coin so he's gonna refund my money. Would have much rather had the coin, bummer.

I would say XF45. I like the detail and folds of the dress. The facial hair looks pretty detailed. There's too much detail there for it to be only VF.
  • CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,070 ✭✭✭✭✭
The item was being sold as UNC. and I tend to agree with that. The detail in this coin is quite significant and I can see no rub or true wear. The toning is what really turns people off as it is typicall toning that accompanies a coin in the F-Xf range. I believe this coin to be a high AU to maybe MS62. I think the toning was the reason that very few bid on it and I won it at a great price. Too bad.

ps. Good call Josh, you have a keen eye!

I was contacted by the seller and he says he found the coin. Payment was re-sent via Paypal with free shipping and the coin is supposed to be on it's way. This may have a good ending after all. And, we just might get to settle the grade question image

Yours is a stunning coin Coinaddict, very nice! I paid about double what you paid...$37.00. To tell you the truth I was willing to pay even more because I had been searching for the thing for so long I was just flabergasted to finally find one that hadn't been worked over with a billo pad. That's what made the dissapointment of losing it so bad...but alas...I may still get it image
