A U.S. Phillippines Peso I picked up today. Warning-large pics

I'm at my home computer and don't have a program that will reduce the size of the pictures. I picked this up a local coin show today. Anyone want to take a stab at the grade (the fuzzy spot on the shield is on the holder)? Also, is this considered a "darkside" coin?

Ah ha. That is good to know.
Nice coin!!
Second, can't tell much about the chest feathers from the scan, and even when the scan is clear that's unreliable without first hand viewing since the absence of chest feathers can be poor strike not wear.
Third, notice that the stars are still sharp. That's uncommon, even in many uncirculated specimens.
And fouth (Top left, top right, and bottom) the three points of the shield, which are among the first places to show wear -- look barely smunched.
So this is in high-grade, at least AU 50, and possibly 53 or even with a stretch (I say stretch because of the serious wear on the wing feathers) AU 55.
Of course, this is just the reverse of the coin. No telling the grade without seeing the front, which could be beaten all to heck -- or magnificent.
I hope this helps and
Enjoy your lovely coin

This time the obverse showed up, as well as the reverse. I can see from the clarity of detail on the hair, the steam coming from Mt. Mayon, and Lady
Liberty's mound of Venus, why you might think this was a proof. And I certainly can't give you any diagnostics to say you're wrong about that.
But proof seems incompatible with any uncirculated grade 60 or above, because if it were proof, wouldn't the line of the anvil would be clear and unbroken? The toes be not be smooshed? And the line of the leg, not worn down?
And on the reverse, the proofs are all so beautifully struck. So the lack of detail on the wing feathers -- the top feathers and the wing tips -- would again seem incompatible with an uncirculated proof. They do to me; don't they to you?
I would be very unhappy paying proof or MS60 prices for any coin with those reverse wing feathers. Heck, I'd be unhappy paying AU58 prices for it; and hesitant to pay AU55 money for it.
Hello Step Hunter: May I assume that you're a fellow afficionado of Full Step Jeffersons?
But in any case, would you kindly help Tone Lover and me analyze the coin by telling us the price you paid?
Kind regards to the two of you,
Just Having Fun
I do collect full step Jeffersons. I have been looking for an interesting Peso for about 3 months. This coin has a much nicer eye appeal than the photo suggests. The dark portions that you see are blue toning. Looking at the coin in person I do not see wear on the wings, but there is a softness in the strike. I paid $825.00 for it. Do you want me to divulge the grade yet? Your analysis has been educational and I appreciate your input.
But if it's proof, it's not proof 62; $825 is way to high for a 1903 proof 62. From the price, I would figure Proof 64 or maybe even 65.
If it's a business strike then Jon's figure of 62 would be right on the button.
So much for my ability to evaluate coins from a scan. And a great warning for me not to buy from scans.
In any case, congratulations on a very nice looking coin and good luck with your Jefferson full steppers.

It is a very nice coin, and this thread is a great example of how difficult it really is to determine grades from images.
Congrats, Stephunter. Enjoy.
Clankeye
Yes, Clankeye. It sure is a great example and a great lesson for me.
Thank you, too Step Hunter for posting it and giving me a great education in the process. And good luck with your US Philippines; may this be the first of many beautiful Lady Liberties to grace your collection.
Warm regards from BAngkok,
