Coin collecting and significant others...

... be it wives, husbands, co-habiters, parents etc. How do they view your hobby?
Do they actively participate, try to participate with mixed results, disinterested, disapproving etc.
To give you the picture of my situation here, i'd just bought a Charles II sixpence in VF, my father asked, "how much did that cost then?", i said "erm £50 but it was a bargin!"
The reply was "wasting your money again then? you could have bought some new shoes with that", or as my mother says "that money's for your travel expenses... *followed by lecture*", good job i didn't tell them the coin had really cost me £125 then.
They only found out about that because they had to sign for the parcel when it had arrived as i was out, which is never good. The 1871 UNC Sovereign i briefly had didn't go down well either... my mother was particularly not impressed by that. My father wasn't very keen on the idea but he did say "well at least it's quality" (Well it was above VF!)
Good job they never found out about this then...
(Otherwise i would have been shot!)

Attending a major show with one's wife has its advantages IMO. The crusty old dealers, not you Chris at NEN, treat you better when the wifey is along side. Also, my wife knows how to 'play the game'. If a dealers gives me a price on a coin, Kelly will tell me that is too much and more than once the dealer has lowered the price.

I condider myself EXTREMELY lucky, i would not enjoy this hobby or be able to spend the time on it that i do if she wasnn't as ennthusiastic about collecting as i am....

My wife was great in the early days. She went with me to every show and every shop. She chatted up the dealers, quite frankly charmed them down to lower prices. I probably got the best deals of my life thanks to her. She's chatty and personable and I'm, well, let's just say that's not my strong point. She also would go on a mission to find those proof sets I always seemed to be looking for.
Nowadays, with a daughter to raise, there are more priorities to juggle - spare time to go hunting for coins comes at a premium. Her attitude now is more, shall we say, sinusoidal about the hobby. She supports my interest but is more vocally sqeamish about the cost of a key date in a series.
I remind her that the British coins I collect have appreciated in value more than many of our ill-fated stock picks. She won't believe me, though, until the coins are sold.

Current wife: feigns interest and "oohs" and "ahhs" at the appropriate times, but doesn't really care much one way or the other. Maybe slightly impressed now and then.

husband used to collect lightside when he was a teenager. My husband still has the coins he saved then. The difference between us is I collect coins because of
my liking their design and history, while he waits for them to "appreciate". His only complaint is, "You never sell any of them!" I hope he makes a fortune on them
if I die before he does...lol.
I have a relativly high-stress occupation and numismatics takes me completely away from it...
