The coin in this link is NOT a real Morgan Dollar and NO mention of it being a COPY is in the seller's description. This is a violation of the US Hobby Protection Act and eBay listing rules.

The seller needs to be reported.

I have reported this to eBay security and sent an internal "Contact Member" to the "winner" of this auction and urge anyone else here to do the same. EBay Reporting Link

  • although I would agree the seller needs to be reported. The buyer is not without fault either.

I mean the discription may not say THIS IS A FAKE It does say it's layered in fine silver. image

I'm a dummie, But I know a morgan dollar is not LAYERED in silverimage

The seller has pulled this crap before and is a clear listing violation. Actually the title and description are required to say its "THIS IS A FAKE" in the words "COPY" or "REPLICA".

Not everyone is savy on coins and paying over $300- for a $5- copy is a tough reading lesson for anyone to learn. I took me awhile to find the "COPY" engraving on the reverse of this coin as I'm used to seeing them at the bottom where the mint mark is on this one.

You'll notice one of the others at the Toolhaus.org link below who "couldn't read" is no longer a resgistered member. This type of activity is a quick discouragement of any newbie collecting coins that doesn't know better.

    I agree.
I wasn't trying to be easy on the seller. I also looked at his feedback,
and he sells a lot of fakes apparently.
Ban him, or hang him. He's a creep. image

It's very easy to get screwed bigtime on ebay. And if the buyer doesn't read discriptions, or feedback. It's all most a sure thing.

  • A real shame there are as many grubs like this in the hobby.Ebay is sleezy to not catch this stuff and we will be the ultimate losers as new collectors are burned and run. This has a deflationary affect on our coins.

  • LonelyP I agree with you , the seller is not entirely at fault here.

Some of the buyers that have given negative feedback have not read or looked at the ads fully until maybe it was too late.

It also appears the seller thinks PROOF=COPY and knows as little about coins as his buyers/victims.

Learning from a bad experience is always the best teacher. I just hate seeing someone getting burned where the money could have been used for better purchases.

  • This is a post I wrote for a contest thread from RYK earlier this week.
    I think it's a good idea. image

I do realize I don't know what it would take to set up. And that DEALERS are in compition with each other. But opened as a joint venture that shouldn't be a real problem.

    Second

Have the BEST BIGGEST AND BRIGHTEST (MOST HONEST) dealers on this and other forums, ( you guys know them better than me) Create a national internet coin "WEB SHOP" Not unlike ebay but with more stringent rules. the coins could be listed by type, price, certified or uncertified, or any other way you can think of. And an area where I (a novice) could list a coin(s). But only starting at .01 or higher only if preapproved for a higher price. By submitting pictures or the coin(s) itself for approval before the auction. This would provide policeing, that everybody wants. While not excluding the nondealer from selling a coin to the genral public. any infringements like nonpayment or nondelivery, result in banishment. A coin submitted for prepproval would ship straight from there. And the auction listing would reflect where the coin is at the time of auction.

Seller's a jerk, but buyer's an idiot! $300 for a key-date Morgan - what a steal!!! Oh, and the seller's feedback is impressive too.

You just can't help all of the idiots out there.

This really URKS me to no end. I've felt strongly against the companys that produce these copys. Should never have been allowed to make them in the first place. But America is a thriving free enterprize and some people feel it's ok. I can live with that, but in this auction someone got hurt bad for $300. Now, on to another more important issue.

I feel this is a big Ebay problem. They are allowing misrepersentation of United States Coins by not filtering out these copy pushers before they get listed within the U.S. Coin auctions.

Ignorance is the night of the mind, but a night without moon or star.-Confucius

“I believe in intuitions and inspirations. I sometimes feel that I am right. I do not know that I am. When two expeditions of scientists, financed by the Royal Academy, went forth to test my theory of relativity, I was convinced that their conclusions would tally with my hypothesis. I was not surprised when the eclipse of May 29, 1919, confirmed my intuitions. I would have been surprised if I had been wrong.”

“Then you trust more to your imagination than to your knowledge?”

“I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

  • I reported this auction to ebay.

  • I have sent message to buyer as well. Should say copy, but does have highlighted that it is silver coated. With 122 E bay purchases this buyer should be no dummy. The whole thing makes no sense. CAVEAT EMPTOR!image

This is such a bad copy that all a collector with half a brain can do is image

Sadly there are people out there with more money than brains who buy this crap. This is the type of item that helps to give eBay a bad name. image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

It is perfectly clear that this coin is not REAL. All You need to do is read the title of the auction. It says .999% Silver. There is NO Morgan Dollar produced at the US Mint that is .999% Silver, thus a fake.

Why don't you gus report the rest of the Non Legal Tender coins list on eBay there must be at least 1000 of them knock yourself out.

The PNG or ANA (or both) could do it. It'd be nice to have an organization with a vested interest in the future of the hobby run an auction site, rather than a company like eBay who're just in it for the money.

I have no sympathy for these buyers. Check this negative feedback:

<< <i>it was a copy of a coin I needed the real of. he was not clear on sell page
    Buyer cjbarone74 ( 5 ) >>

The moron paid $2.75 for an 1893-S and he was expecting a real one?

  • If they did and all the legit sellers and buyers used it.
Ebay would become the coin vault of fake coins.
