1991 Topps Desert Shield pack break.... Round 2

Just busted 12 more packs of 91 Topps Desert Shield. Since I did so well with the last ones (monetarily), I decided to try again before the price on the graded commons falls as the pops continue to grow. Still looking for Ripken, Murray, Chipper for my collection. Here's how I did with some scans:

HOFers/stars/RCs- Bonds x2, Ripken (yay), Unit, Clemens, Ryno, Ryno RB, Puckett, Griffey AS, Alomar, Eck, Ozzie, Mattingly (wax), Murray AS, Winfield, A.Fernandez RC, Offerman RC.

91 DS 1
91 DS 2
91 DS 3

57 Commons/semis that should get 9 or better (I'll probably get 3-5 8s and 3-5 10s like I did the last batch). The Alomar is the only star with 10 potnetial. The key for me is I got the Ripken, and even if I break even I will be very happy. Realisticly, I will proably end up making $100-250 after grading based on what I got in my last bunch of D.S. auctions, but it's possible that the prices will be lower this time around.

  • if you ever so happen to get 2 chippers and would like to share one with a special someone, PM me.
  • Wow nice pulls. The two Bonds look nice. Are all these packs coming from the same wax box?

The Bonds' look like a 9 and an 8 to me. All these wax came from the same guy who said he got them while stationed in Iraq. I think he has a lot more but doesn't want to sell any at this time.

  • The Bond All Star I just sold on Ebay went for $150+. It was a 9

I would be interested in the Ozzie Smith card if you are willing to part with it.

    Thank you.

If you don't mind me asking, how much were the packs?

I paid around $50 per pack which isn't too bad considering how few are left. these are the first I've seen in a long while.

led- I'd much rather let these guys fly on ebay after grading. When I posted my results last time, several people PM'd me wanting particular cards I quoted them a price about 10% less than I thought I'd get on ebay after grading, then everybody said my prices were too high, or I was high on crack, or both. Turns out I was right on with my pricing for the most part. I'd much rather skip that unpleasantness this time around, but you can feel free to PM me any offers.

  • Lee, what you say is definitely not true about the prices you quoted me and the prices that were realized at auction. Others would need to speak for themselves but here is what you quoted me and the actual auction prices realized.

Most did not make it to half of what you quoted to me.

PSA 9 Tommy Lasorda quoted at $35.00 sold at auction $16.50
PSA 9 Chilli Davis quoted at $35.00 sold at auction $12.39
PSA 9 Kevin Brown quoted at $45.00 sold at auction $10.49
PSA 9 Mark Grace quoted at $45.00 sold at auction $15.50
PSA 9 John Olerud quoted at $45.00 sold at auction $16.27
PSA 9 Larry Walker quoted at $60.00 sold at auction $32.10
PSA 9 Barry Larkin quoted at $60.00 sold at auction $18.55
PSA 9 David Segui quoted at $60.00 sold at auction $15.50
PSA 9 Roberto Alomar quoted at $80.00 sold at auction $21.51
PSA 9 Paul Molitor quoted at $80.00 sold at auction $52.01
PSA 9 Carl Everett quoted at $100.00 sold at auction $32.01

Total Prices Quoted: $645.00 Actual Auction Total: $242.83

Hmmmm.....I wonder what $400 could buy a person.....

Why post this stuff again if your intention is not to interest potential buyers on this board who are generally more serious buyers than the eBay sniper wackos.

I guarantee you I would have paid a fair price much higher than the $240 you got for these cards with no hassles of multiple shipments or all the fees you incurred. Lucky if you cleared $220 on these 11 items.

I'm sure some others on this board would have made better deals for you on the other cards as well.

    Whatever.....

  • I'm sure he made an educated guess..and how is he supposed to know what an auction will end at? Just my humble opinion image.

  • Ryan, here is exactly what he stated in the post right above my reply.....

"I quoted them a price about 10% less than I thought I'd get on ebay after grading, then everybody said my prices were too high, or I was high on crack, or both. Turns out I was right on with my pricing for the most part"

I don't have a problem with someone making or "guessing" their prices but I do have a problem with the misleading statement about being "right on with my pricing" as he says.

It is wrong for someone to try to establish credibility in pricing when they cannot backup the statement with accurate data or information. In this specific case it was so far off (over $400) that I am very surprised to see this post or any reference to the previous one.

An uninformed buyer could trust this miscalculation of value and would be very disappointed at some later date to find out that what they purchased is worth less than half of what they paid for it.

The actual selling price for these items was less than 40% of what I was quoted.....I would say that this is very far from "right on"

    Just my informed opinion.......
  • Your point is understood. Personally I think he was simply guessing, however optimistically, what they would sell for. Sounds like another "modern" price check sledgehammer to the face, but i'm sure the second time around cdsnuts will be a bit more inline with pricing. If not, then just buy them for a fraction of the perceived value on ebay.

I'll have to step in and defend Lee, who has been giving us all great examples of flipping modern wax for reasonable profit.

Perhaps, since he has been relatively successful he can command a higher price. His eye for grading is certainly above average and he may be at the point where he has repeat buyers.

I understand that we all peruse Ebay looking for the cheap buy, and the average price for a certain grade can also vary.

Sometimes though an 8 is not just an 8. Maybe if we looked at his product we would find that his cards are high end in the grade.

The price is relative to the buyer's desire to complete or update a set.

Also, maybe it is best to work out the differences in private.

    jcross,
Sometimes one's perception of what went down and what actually went down are two different things. I made a false statement honestly believing it was true without actually going back to find out if I was correct or not. I guess I was so pleased with the profit I made off this lot that the cards "must have" brought what I originally thought they'd bring, but that's not the case with a lot of them. I can see why you would be surprised by the statement as the figures are very different. My mistake, and I apologize for making a misleading statement.

However, my purpose of these posts is not to garner interest for the cards I'm getting and get a higher price, although sometimes that's a pleasant side effect. I'm trying to share stories with fellow collectors about something I've always wanted to do, and I suspect the same for a lot of people. There are a handful of people on these boards I've sent cards to free, and a handful more that I've sold cards to at prices that I'm pretty sure I could have gotten more on ebay for.

Synopsis: I was wrong, I'm sorry. I'm not trying to round up buyers on these boards. I will better check my statements before I post them in the future. I've been doing a lot of apologizing lately- maybe I'm not getting enough fiber.

I'm not trying to defend anyone, but the second part of Lee's post was directed to me. Maybe no one else was suppose to read it. So do i get a shot at the Ozzie or not?

Led, sent you a PM. Are they turned on?

  • Lee, thank you for the clarification.

Is there anything wrong with it... if you were trying to do that?
    Thanks,
  • Personally I think JCross has a flip up his ars. No apology necessary.
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
Nah, jcross was right. I made a statement that was very far off and he called me out on it. Nothing wrong with keeping me honest.

Led, I guess your PM's are off. If you want the Ozzie it's yours for $15 dlvd. I have no doubt it will grade an 8 due to 65/35 LR centering, but it's an otherwise clean card and the 9 I had sold for $35.
