Is Dale Murphy Deserving of the Hall?

AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
Just a thought...heard him on the dan patrick show today, looked up his stats:

back to back MVPs (82 and 83), lead the league in HRs twice (was second 3 times), 398 career HRs, 5 time gold gloves, 7 time all star.

Just would like some other's insights.

I have to say no. He had some great years, but I don't think his career as whole was hall worthy. I put with Rice and Dawson in the just miss category.

If he had used roids, I would say yes, but without roids he was just another good player!

Dale Murphy in the Hall of fame would need a ticket like the rest of us.Solid player but no hall of famer.

One of my favorite players growing up. One heck of a nice guy too, but alas, I don't think he's a HOF'er.

Perhaps if he stayed a catcher

Ax - no....same rationale as your usual position on HOF'ers which I think is accurate. Regards.

While listening to him on the radio show this morning, he spoke of the knee injury that Bonds has is the same one that ended his career, and he was pessimistic on Bonds ever playing again.

I suspect Bonds will attempt a comeback at some point late this year or early next, but the damage done to the knee will prove to be too much.
  • he was very good but his career #'s are not good enough here are the players most similar to him(from baseball reference.com) only 1 hall of famer(duke snider) Similar Batters

THis is a tough one. He was the best home run hitter for a stint, but I am not sure it was long enough.

He was moved to the outfield because he could no longer play catcher--he was breaking down.

Do we judge him as an outfielder of a catcher?

Too difficult for me to make a choice right now about his HOF credentials. He will be on the Ballot for a long time even if he doesn't get elected.

You might want to judge him as an outfielder. Dale Murphy played catcher for parts of his first four seasons - 85 games total. In 1980 he moved to the outfield where he played until 1993. Apparently, Murphy broke down as a catcher at age 23.

Very solid PS player (pre steroid). But probably a bit shy of the hall.
  • No and neither is Mattingly, Munson, John, Kaat and everyone else that gets argued about on a consistent basis.

    Rediculous - Not a chance!
  • I think half of us reading/discussing this thread could have hit a homer in the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Playing there was like being on roids.

IMO, if Murphy was playing today, his stats would not make it. But during the years he played he was a feared batter for more than just a couple years. The 5 gold gloves proves he could play defense and an all-star that many times means he had fan support. I'd like to see him make it, since I watched him daily on TBS through his best years. But, will he make it? Not anytime soon.

Only one other multiple MVP Award winner, Roger Maris, has failed to make it to Cooperstown.

    Close, but not quite.

I would argue, he has more than 398 homeruns. Hitting 35 homeruns a season in the early 80's? That'd be like 50 now.

Maybe 2-3 more years and he'd be in.
  • Happy birthday Dale!
