I don't have experience grading these but I'll give it a guess to keep you on page one for now. I like these kind of edutainment posts.

    AU50.

It may be my lousy laptop's screen, but it looks like theres a bit of wear on the lower stars.

  • I have one that looks very similar. Maybe a little more wear on the stars and the 5 and it comes in as AU50. I’d say AU55 or AU58

    Nice Shield
    Always looking

  • UH OH - Harlen sold it to me as an ms62. I'm still going to send it in and see what PCGS sais, I know these scans are'nt always the best.
So is it typical to haggle the grading of a coin at the shop, or would most dealers just stand by the coin and say well that's what we think and that's what it's selling for....

I too like the guess the grade posts, as they are very educational.

    Thanks for the replies.

It's a pretty small image. It's hard to tell for sure. Based on the picture I'd be inclined to say AU-55, but that's with the understanding that it's hard to really feel confident with an image that small.
  • Note to self...Bigger images next time!! I'm not throwing these back o nthe scanner, but, will follow up in a month (PCGS grading time) to show what they think and of course rescan larger.

  • I believe most dealers will not haggle the grade of a coin. They may have a bit of room on price. I've never delt with Harlan but have heard they are fair. From the scan it could be a 62 to me, or a 63 or an AU coin, I just can't see enough to be more confident.

I agree with Carl that the photo does not show enough to grade the coin. It cold anything from Ch AU to MS-63.

I will say this, however. It's a very nice strike for this coin. Most of the stars show their radial lines and the shield is complete at the top. That's more than one can say for many Shield Nickels.

  • I'm pleased either way. It's a fine addition to my collection. I will be visiting there again today- leaving my wallet at home...

I'm working on improving findnoig optimal settings on my scanner to get a good file size and pic in under 50kb.

Could be better than I think. Scanners are notoriously poor at capturing luster.
