A darn cool 3-Cent nickel double-error (large photo)

Firstly, it exhibits a very nice clash in which you can see nearly the full outline of the portrait
surrounding the "III" on the reverse and, secondly, the reverse is rotated nearly 180 degrees!

Tidbit #1 - I have the same coin in Fine condition.

Tidbit #2 - I saw an MS65 at the ANA show that appears to have the exact same clash, only
the reverse was not rotated!

  • I also have this coin. It's only about VG, but you can see the clash on the back very well.
A 1943 copper Lincoln will still only buy a gumball out of the machine, but you can purchase the machine and the store with that same cent.

dudes, basically every die-marriage for 1865 is clashed. there's only a low %-age chance you have the exact same dm!!!

The 1865 dated type coin in my set shows the same clash marks, only stronger. You can pretty much see both sides of the coins by looking at either side. image

I that that Karl has got it right. Finding one of these 1865 nickel three cents pieces that is struck perfectly is a lot harder than find one with clash markes or die breaks. The mint had an awlful time making these coins. They didn't call nickel "the devil's copper" for nothing. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Nice looking original 3-Cent. Coins with rotated reverses are cool to have and they make it more interesting.

Cool! Although the clashes aren't hard to find, really strong ones like that aren't so easy... I spent a full day at Baltimore looking for one, and only found one... this is my baby:

While finding clashes on an 1865 3CN is very common, this is the first I've seen that was clashed with a rotated die. Note that the face on Ken's coin is on the right side of the reverse and upright instead of inverted on the left side.

    I think it's a cool coin. I really like Jeremy's too. image
