ESPN piling on Griffey Jr?

AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
Has anyone else noticed lately how in every sportscenter, or on ESPNews, they mention every time the Reds highlights come up that Griffey hasn't hit a home run? Or they mention his low batting average?

It seems to be more than just a coincidence....like they're trying to bait him out into a tasty soundbite or something else. Just seems odd that someone who has done so many great things in his career both on and off the field is being subjected to this kind of abuse. What, Bonds isn't available so they need to divert their negative energy elsewhere?

  • Havent noticed, but it is pretty sad to me how his career has taken a turn after leaving Seattle. He WAS the Mariners. I gotta think that if he could change anything in his life, it would have been that. The fans loved the guy, he was playing like a god...

Sorry Junior... Maybe HIS kid will be the next Jr.

I think a lot of his decision to leave Seattle was both moving closer to his family, and the fact that Safeco was going to be such a pitcher's park.

But I think you are right, he would stay if he could make the decision again.

I'm a Junior fan. Last weekend we went to Cincy for the weekend and took in a game. I was surprised as hell when he got booed after double because he didn't run hard and try to get a triple. I would think the fans would want him to play it safe and not get hurt again.
  • If he has to slow down to avoid tossin a hammy thats pretty bad... Maybe he should hang it up, OR get in SHAPE like he was with the M's...

Post-Mike Schmidt era, Griffey is my favorite. Yes it is a shame he has been hurt, and I wish he had stayed with the Mariners. He never looked right in red ....

Griffey has had a HOF career. He is definitely on the down slope of his career, but he may still reach the 600 mark. Doubtful, but look what Barry Bonds has done at Griffey's age.

Griffey JR is a "good guy". Too bad about his injuries. Hope he makes a sustained comeback. The game needs guys like him, and he helped save the game during/after the strike years.

Good god GBG you have it in for me don't you? All I said was that ESPN seems to mention every night that Jr hasn't hit a homer this year....where did I say ESPN was to blame?

And just when or where have you EVER seen or head Jr blame anyone for his poor showing since going away from Seattle? You'll neeed to look long and hard, and then you still won't find anything.
  • Yea, the bleacher fans at wrigley booed him all day long wednesday. Personally I think he is DONE. I've been saying it for 2 years now. He will NOT be back. blame it on years of no conditioning. where was it that someone said instead of warming up or cooling off after games griffey would just plop down and play video games. I wish I remember who said that... alzheimers!!

My buddy in Wa worked at a gas station . Jr always tipped him $20 when he stopped. Said he gave people autos that ran into him there etc..Never heard that he was a Bonds like player.....

I've heard a good number of these type of stories...going as far as the family who he befriended who lost their father in the 9/11 attacks. He flew the mother and son out for a set of games, paid for everything for him. In addition the kid who caught his 500th home run ball who he flew to the all star game, gave him great seats, paid for the whole deal.

From all accounts, Junior's a great guy who doesn't get his due, unfortunately.

Yes that was a great story on both sides. The kid for not holding the ball ransom and Junior for hooking him up.

TTT for a little read for all the Jr bashers. Seems alittle different from April- May till now. If it wasnt for that horrible start he would probably be leading the majors in HR and everyone would consider him a hero, for he wasn't mentioned in the steriod topic EVER.... JMO

Griffey is a top 10 hitter in the NL....I was surprised he stayed injury free, but now he is close to having his best season in 5 years.

I know we have a month to go and things can happen, but he should be in the top 10 in OPS when all is said and done.

and yet STILL the reds are like 25 games back in the NL central with absolutely NO chance of seeing playoffs in this Decade based on the way that St. Louis is playing imageimageimage
  • and he is Injured AGAIN

Griffey hobbled into third and left the game with a sprained right foot. He is day to day.

Spoke too soon. This injury is not season ending, so let us see what happens. Yes, the Reds suck, but Griffey is in the top 10 in OPS and should keep that.

And that's his fault how? Remember, he signed at BELOW market value to play closer to home. It's his fault team management has no clue how to put together a team?

And you laughing at a player getting injured? Are you sick? Do you need counseling?

And 'couldn't happen to a nicer guy'? The man has devoted his life to the sport, is nothing short of a role model to kids everywhere...works hard, enjoys the game, plays hard, and never has been tainted with steroids that clouded so many of his contemporaries....there are countless stories of his kindness, his love of the game.

You are plain and simply jealous that he has such infinite god-given talent, that he dominated the game for so long, and enjoyed a good comeback this year?

You sir are malicious, hateful and spiteful. You, sir, are sickening.

Pathetic that you take joy from someone getting hurt. I will laugh my ass off the day you get yourself injured.

  • I think Griffey is having a great year and it is great to see him play in the NL Central when he is healthy. He has one of the sweetest swings in the business and is a sure future HOF'er. Unfortunately, I think he comes under heavy criticism for three main reasons:

    (1) No conditioning. So when you see him "jog" to first, or when he fails to turn a double into a triple, people get ticked off because they think he is lazy although he may be trying to avoid injury. And on this point they are right. This guy is getting paid a ton of money and gets injured very easily every season. Overall, you can tell the guy doesn't take care of himself, but it apparently hasn't kept him from hitting home runs this season.

    (2) He is a shy guy who subconsciously plays the race card and fans have caught on and the media exaggerates it. I remember when he was having his first bad and injured season in Cincinnati and every reporter wanted a story, but Griffey only wanted someone "he could relate to" and feel "comfortable" with. So, he chose Harold Reynolds, and immediately the media thought he favored blacks over others. Of course, no one mentioned that Reynolds was in Seattle and served as somewhat of a mentor. Griffey will also do extensive interviews with Joe Morgan. Overall, he seems to choose his own kind for extensive interviews, but I don't think it is as bad as most reporters make it out to be.

    (3) Not nice to the fans? I think sometimes he is great, other times he is a jerk. There is no middle ground here and I guess what you see is what you get.

As far as ESPN, they are not doing it just to Griffey. They are attention whores who are in the business of selling news and want results yesterday. The same thing happened in 1998 with the Sosa/McGwire race and in 2001 with Bonds' homers. When any of these players did not hit a home run, ESPNEWS would start off by essentially saying, "Player X did not hit any home runs today in pursuit of the record. How dare that loser make our broadcast boring? Now to you Dan about that boring College Football or NASCAR story."
