The Lions were after one of the 3 DB's that were all taken before their pick, so they went with Williams as you just can't predict what he may be able to do for their team. Millen said something the other day on ESPN, which is something I have said all along. Williams can make Detroits defense much better simply because they can stay off the field longer if the offense can move the ball more consistently. Detroit was always going 3 and out and that can kill your defense faster than anything. Their defense show marked improvement early in the game last year in key situations, but they still need some help from the offense for late in the game when they are so tired... If they can stay healthy (and Boss can show why Detroit has been so high on him) and if Harrington and Co. can keep the ball moving a little more, they should be a playoff contender. Their defense can only improve if their offense does IMO.

True, but both Merriman and Derrick Jonhnson fell in their laps at 10. Both were considered big playmakers on D

I guess only time will tell if it was a wise choice or not

Yeah, but they said there were mainly focused on Jones and Rolle as a possibility. With Williams, time will certainly tell. He was projected to be a top 3 pick a year ago, but most said he fell simply because he hadn't played for a year. You never know how any players will pan out either as a rookie or as a free-agent. Many players benefit from systems or supporting casts and simply fail with their new teams. I've seen so many collaspse, that one never knows what to expect. Williams played with 2 great QB's at USC, so maybe he's just a product of a great QB and a system. I hope that's not the case, but if he plays anything like he did with USC then the Lions got a real bargain with him at 10. If he doesn't, then he will just be added to the long list of failed top prospects in the NFL.

    Agree 100%

I get a kick out of these so called experts who claim BEFORE the draft that it's a " weak " draft .

How can use say it's a weak draft before these kids even step on the field. Wait a couple years then give your opinions on what type of draft it is

I think the perception of it being a weak draft is due to the fact there was no overwhelming #1 pick....but I agree, I think it's one of the strongest drafts as terms of depth in a while, but you are right, only time will tell just how good these players are.

It can be the same with free agency as well... Certain players are strong in a system, but are not as reliable outside of that system. For instance, any RB that plays for the Broncos becomes a superstar. Some who have left the Broncos cannot continue with their success though. I would likely bet Clarett will be the next to shine in Denver, enen though most though he may drop down to the 5th round. Denver has has some great backs play well for them, but not for anyone else. That is why I cannot jump on a bandwagon that says a team like Minnesota has made such key off-season moves. Show me what these guys can do with a lousy defense and lets roll from there. I have seen Detroit make some fairly decent free-agent acquisitions, only to see them become terrible here. Then they go to another good team and become good players again, only because the players around them are strong.
