1980 OPC PSA 10 Gretzky on Ebay First One!!!!

Good morning Hockey collectors. I see that the first second year card of Wayne Gretzky has finally been graded. I am over 50% complete in this set but I think this one will be out of my price range. Any ideas on its worth???????????????

I saw that card last night - pretty sweet! I figure it will go for about $1,200-1,500. I just now noticed the cancellation in the bid history, so I'm guessing the reserve is $1,000.

Beautiful card. Centering leaves a little to be desired for a 10 IMHO (left and bottom), but still within range.

When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

    Very nice card.

In the text he states Paypal, M.O. or cashiers check and he has the Paypal graphics at the bottom of the page. but in his payment instructions he has "payment by M.O. only within 7 days"

    Hmmmm? Typo maybe?

    does anyone know the seller?
    Bob
  • I know the seller. Cannot remember his name at this time but have dealt with him a few times. No problem with him on the seller end at all.Even with more expensive items. Thing is that he is more known for BVG and BGS cards graded 9 or 9.5. I would ask for a better scan just to check to make sure the rough cut is on this card. I am not saying it is trimmed or sheet cut to put the his auction down but when a person sells mostly BVG or BGS it will make you wonder if one slipped through the cracks. Last i checked it was at 2550.00. It does look like it has the rough cut in the scan. I think 2500.00 for the card is very reasonable. Why it has not hit his reserve is beyond me !! I think he may have put up a rediculous reserve to see who bids it up and then relists it with either no reserve or a lower reserve then the S**T will hit the fan.

    Onlypsahockey,

MO only, probably because taking paypal on an auction of that value would cost you a fortune... with a MO or cashier's check, he won't have to pay paypal their fee

Says he takes paypal in the description though. Payment is to be made by Paypal or cashiers / bank check only within 7 days of auction end.
    Good for you.

Holy cow! I cannot believe the level this card is at. You might be right about the ridiculous reserve, ezy.

Would a card like that do better in a major auction such as Mile High or Legacy/Superior?

$2,700.00 with 8+ days left. I can't see him doing much better thru one of the big auction houses. And he doesn't have to kick out the commission.

    very, very nice card btw

  • EZY,
Are you crazy? Do you think PSA would encapsulate a trimmed card of this magnitude? We are talking a 1 of 1 pop 10. And how can you tell from a scan if this card is sheet cut or trimmed? If somebody had an uncut sheet and could duplicate the cut exactly would the card be elligible for grading?
    I love candy cards
  • I'm not saying it is trimmed. In the scan i see the rough cut. I do know he sells cards from uncut sheets graded by BVG and BGS. Maybe he did find a way to cut cards with a rough cut. I would hope not because that would be very hard on any grader to distinguish.
I think the card is legit after blowing up the scans. He is going to make somebody pay for this card. I think his reserve is 5000.00. That's just a guess. Maybe start a new thread guessing his reserve !! LOL

That is insane. As I just PM'd one of you: This is a super nice card, but is it really $2,700 to $4,500 nicer than a top-notch 9? Maybe I'm in the wrong income bracket or something, but I'd say that more often than not, the Gem Mint grade is just a fiction.

I agree completely. Without seeing the card, and I don't doubt that it's in amazing condition, I can almost guarantee that there is a PSA 9 out there that's as nice if not nicer. In cases like this the premium for a 10 over a 9 is not justified...and crazy!
