"Field Of Dreams" Pitching Staff

DirtyHarryDirtyHarry Posts: 1,917 ✭✭✭
You are putting together the core for your all time greatest pitching staff. You can pick 5 starters and 2 relievers. Who do you want and why? Assume no DH.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

SP - Walter Johnson - 416 career victories, career 2.17 ERA, 110 shutouts...what more can one ask for?
SP - Satchel Paige - Had this "palm ball" among others that completely baffled batters. Plus, Joe DiMaggio called him "the best and fastest pitcher I've ever faced."
SP - Warren Spahn - Need a great lefty in the lineup and who else should there be?
SP - Steve Carlton - My second lefty. 4,136 career strikeouts, 3.22 career ERA, I think he is a good choice
SP - Bob Gibson - For when I get to the World Series...There is none other I would want - Koufax included.

RP - Hoyt Wilhelm - I don't know who want to face his knuckleball late in the game.
RP - Dennis Eckersley - Give him the ball to get the save - if needed.

    Starters:

    1. Walter Johnson
    2. Bob Feller
    3. Sandy Koufax
    4. Dizzy Dean

I am having trouble with the last spot... in the starting rotation and I would prefer a lefty... Warren Spahn, Lefty Grove, Sam McDowell, and I know I haven't recognized some of the talent after 1975. I like Juan Marishall of the Giants but... 4 right handers is probably not the best...

    Relief pitchers:

    1. Lee Smith
    2. Dennis E

There are some that deserve recognition... Rollie Fingers, Roy Face, Hoyt Wilheim just to name afew and I apologize for those I have left out.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • I'd throw Denny McClain into the mix. In his prime, he won 104 games in 4 years.

Not consistent enough. In his first six seasons, he was 36-40 with 405 walks in 691 2/3 innings pitched. It wasn't until 1962 that he became untouchable and that lasted until 1966. Four seasons of superb performance doesn't put him above Spahn in my book. However, Koufax was so great in 4 seasons that he was rightfully elected to the HOF.

  • I'll take individual years, in the modern era (after 1968):
    Gooden in 84
    Clemens in 85
Pedro in 97 (really his best year, but playing for Les Expos he just didn't have the wins)
Johnson any year from the late 90's/early 2000's
Santana last year, the guy was AWESOME!

    Closers:
    Gagne 2 years ago
    Eckersley in 91

Since I never saw many of the great's pitch I'll have to stick with those I have-

    SP:
Bob Gibson (never saw him live but I've seen enough footage and I'm biased)
    Roger Clemens
    Pedro Martinez
    Randy Johnson
Greg Maddux (not as dominant as the others but just solid)

    RP:
    Billy Wagner
    Trevor Hoffman
  • Nolan Ryan
Walter Johnson both Ryan and Johnson were pitchers for losing teams for most of their careers
    Bob Gibson
    Babe Ruth
    Steve Carlton

    Relievers:
    Christy Mathewson, 84 relief appearances...had a .665 winning percentage, won 30 4 times and 20 or more 12 seasons in a row
Cy Young, almost 100 relief appearances....he could fill in as a starter too

All of these guys had twenty year careers or longer and were winners.

If I have to take modern day-full time relievers I'd take Lee Smith and Bruce Sutter

  • "both Ryan and Johnson were pitchers for losing teams for most of their careers"

Ryan pitched 27 seasons, 14 of which his team had a winning record. The first three losing seasons were with the Mets, when he was a kid making relief appearances. I guess "most" is not entirely accurate.

    1. Warren Spahn (lefty)
    2. Mordecai Brown (righty)
    3. Walter Johnson (righty)
    4. Randy Johnson (lefty)
    5. Roger Clemens (righty)

    set up man: Goose Gossage

    closer: Trevor Hoffman

Funny how people put Nolan Ryan in their top 5 all time...yes he threw a ton of K's, but wow did he have some bad years in ERA. Many, many years at the league average in it, to be exact.

Lefty Grove, perhaps the BEST ever, no one has even mentioned him, please look up the records.
    Walter Johnson
    Christy Mathewson
    Sandy Koufax
Roger Clemens / Carl Hubbell ( TIE )

Relief, only post WW2 as they became known for that talent primarily starting around then.
    Hoyt Wilhelm

Really neat thread. I would have to include

Cy Young--his won games record (511) is the one record that, I think, will never be broken.
    Walter Johnson
    Sandy Koufax
    Roger Clemens
    Randy Johnson

Great responses and staffs. My choices are partly emotional and partly statistical. As no DH, I like bats. I also like venom and uncertainty.
