New Purchase - Philippines 1897 Peso

Just picked this up friday.

It has that 'Look' that I like, but I think I paid too much (toning tax?)
The dealer had it marked at $135, but I picked it up for $75
Anyone have a Krause?
He graded it AU/BU and I agree. It either has a little wear in the hair, or it was weakly struck.

I also won one, that same month, from a Stacks auction (skeptical of their grading), XF, for $65.

You have a nice coin there. From the fullness of the ribbon on the reverse, as it crosses the pillar -- and the legibility of the legend on the ribbon, the reverse looks unc. But the hair on the obverse shows just a tiny bit of filling in, consistent with slight wear. So figure anywhere from AU58 to MS60.
In either case, you have a bargain. A large hoard (maybe 1,000) was discovered a few years ago in the Philippines. My guess is that this is from that hoard. I've personally looked through about 400 of them, and didn't find any the equal of yours. The coin is worth at least $125 as a beautiful AU. And if it is unc. the coin is extremely scarce in that condition and could easily be worth double that. You got yourself a very nice deal.
Enjoy it. It's a beaut.

For a second there, I thought that was a Puerto Rican peso, which would have been a really nice snag!
Thanks for the great info - it is VERY appreciated.
