Strange animal that my local coin dealer showed me

He showed me a roll that he got from a FULL new bank box of . . . ahem . . .

Bison nickels...........

and one end was a darn PEACE nickel on one end - the other end was a dadgum . . . ahem . . .
BISON!

IS that WEIRD?????

He said all the others in the box - the rolls he opened were . . . you know the B word - all four legged animals!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought some rolls from him earlier in week, and he asked me if I found any Peace nickels in those rolls that DH had got for me . . . I haven't even opened them all - Maybe I could have a Peaceful Bison in there too! I was just lookin' for spears and gave up after 1/2 of them produced ZIP.

Now how do ya think that happened - it was a shotgun roll.
He said he has been dieing to open it. I told him don't open it.

Seriously - I am not joking.

No doubt a coin sees various sortng / counting / rolling machines from the time it gets ejected from the press to the time it finds itself in a bank roll. It sounds to me like somewhere in the process, some coins left over from the Peace Nickel run were still in the works when the Buffalos came through. This situation is similiar to the one responsible for the 1943 copper cents and 1944 steel cents - although I say similiar because those overlaps occured at the planchet stage.
  • There's a remote possibility that the roll was opened and the end coin was replaced and resealed. I was told in the past that original bank wrapped doesn't always mean original. Apparently there is a tool avalible to reseal rolls to look bank wrapped.

Here by us Brinks rolls the coins, it is very common to get mixed rolls and not solid date rolls. I found that out when the state quarters 1st came out and I sold a few brinks rolls on E-Bay. The buyer opened them and 5 of the coins were from different states or not state quarters at all.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!
