I respect everyone’s opinions as expressed in this thread about ethics or lack of ethics involved in this situation. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, given the negative reaction of a number of collectors, isn’t it reasonable for most of you to conclude as I have that this is not the “best” way to promote Tom’s collection.
A former professor of mine once suggested that if you criticize something, you should offer an alternative, so ...
With all due respect, if I had that assignment, I think I would have proposed a contest of some sort that would have encouraged one and all to at least look at the scans of Tom’s coins on the internet, study past prices realized, check pop numbers, etc. If the coins are really that good, the quality might persuade some people to put in a bid or two that they might not otherwise have submitted.
One form of the contest would be to have forum members offer guesses on which 3 or 4 coins in each of several categories will bring the highest prices; categories could include (1) 1946 to 1958, (2) varieties, (3) S-mints, etc., etc. It would be nice if everyone briefly gave their reasoning, which in turn would provoke some debate.
I’m sure others can come up with equally good, if not better, ideas for a contest The point is to put the focus on the coins in the collection and not on some side issue.
Wondercoin could easily give away the bulk of his fee, or even more, in prizes and emerge as a folk hero of sorts, or at least not as a villain.
You may know something about Lincoln cents, but your knowledge of rock music is suspect. Your Jimi Hendrix quote ("as Jimi Hendrix said") is from a song written by Bob Dylan and covered later by Jimi. Any knowledgeable music buff would have said "or as Bob Dylan said."

Gerry -Your making this sound like a GAME SHOW.
HomeRunHall -Stop contradicting me.I prefer the Jimmy Hendrix version of "All along the Watchtower" considerably over the Bob Dylan version which he wrote.I listen to Jimi sing it several times a year.I could hear it as I was composing my reply.Perhaps if you agreed with me at least once I would get a Presidential Review upgrade.
Steve,Coolkarma - You will not hear me talk about any of Mershons coins on these message boards until AFTER the sale is over.If I say something about a coin before the sale then I can assure you it is total B.S.
I can't believe I didn't see this thread until now!!
Right on David !! Stewart, I am ashamed of you, because YOU did say, "as Jimi said" . Coins are one thing, but not giving Zimmerman credit for his writing is blasphemy, pure and simple.
by BOB DYLAN "There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief, "There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief. Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth, None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."
"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke, "There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke. But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate, So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."
All along the watchtower, princes kept the view While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl, Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

1) 1893 o Barber dime PCGS ms 68 - Of course this is #1 because I own it 2) 1894 s Proof 66 - This coin is spectacular and will cross the $1,000,000 when it sells in March 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

So then Stew was TOTALLY B.S.ing us when he was talking about JHF's new barber dime??????
A possible conflict of interest does not necessarily turn in to a true conflict of interest. I, for one, am looking forward to Mitch's comments since I can't see the coins in person. Plus, I don't think I could afford any of them any way.
Comments from Mitch, et. al., with some nice pics (hopefully) could be a great learning experience. Bring it on!

Doug, After reading Mitch's original post and then Stewart's response and all the comments including yours here, it is obvious to me that our hobby, at least on these boards, is all about MONEY, investing, being #1, getting more for your money by sniping a seller, inside information, telling lies, being afraid to provide so called "expert" opinions for fear of retribution even though ANY intellegent potential buyer of coins at these levels KNOWS promotion when he sees it. On and on. Oh how I wish there were more people who could just participate without all the BS and be open to show their coins with the community and tell us honestly how they enjoy their coins. I know that isn't going to happen in this competitive atmosphere, but it is nice to dream anyway. Steve
One significant exception to my above comments is JHF who has shown by his writing to be a TRUE collector who is not feeding BS but is passionate about his coins. Notice how he always takes the time to reply to everyone who comments to him. That says alot to me about the man himself, and that is probably why he has been so sucessful in whatever he does. As always, this is JMHO.

BINGO!!
I don't have the time to participate like some do. I do enjoy reading the forums (US and Registry) though. They provide a lot of good information to collectors at all levels. I especially enjoy reading about collectors advancing their collections. Whether the set is a Finest Known, top 5, or 50th out or 55. Everyone has to start somewhere, and all sets are important to their owners, no matter what the financial investment is.
Having said that, I also believe in competition. One of the biggest things the Registries, PGCS and NGC, have done, has been to promote competition amoung collectors. The ability to compare your set to anyone else's who has registered promotes the competition. It drives many to try to achieve the next level, to move up one more notch. This has helped to creat many great sets.
I agree with you that the most of the self-serving promotions and BS could be eliminated, or at least be cut by 90%, and it would make this board more collector friendly.
You can't be serious!!?? Don't tell me that you made that pic of HRH as Darth Vader? It's a classic. I've downloaded it to my hard drive for later use if that's O'K with you.

Nothing surprising in this thread at all. I am not an elitist even though I've been collecting lincoln cents since the mid 50's. However not at all surprised that some of you fall to the basest common denominator in calling others that, which reflects more on you than it does your intended victim.
Not suprised in the least that wondercoins is promoting this set and self-promting himself, in fact I would be shocked if it didn't finally come to this. For me its one more reason NOT to bid on any of the coins. I've worn out too many pairs of hipwaders and had to defend my backside far too often from smoke to even consider buying anything he sells or recommends.
Not surprised that some of you refuse to see the obvious conflict of interest. SSDD.
It seems Wondercoin gets involved in so many things that it would be surprising if there weren't potential conflicts of interest. Only a few years ago he was still searching for raw coins. It's a wonder he has the time and stamina for everything.
