2005-D 'Speared Bison' error grades in

Well it's been exactly 2 wks. today since I found the first batch of bison error coins (reverse die gouge). I sent a few of these error coins to ANACs, after speaking with them, (also sending some to PCGS) and I just got the grades today for first batch.

Altho nothing to write home about, I was happily surprised because most of the coins in the rolls are really trashed on obverse. I sent in the ones that I thought may be the best of the 'first lot' found - Anyway for the grades: 4 were 65, and one is 64. I was actually expecting lower, so this is a good day.

I am almost positive 99.9 that the holders will say 'Speared Bison', but I won't know for sure until I see them with my own eyes. I was told that they would say that. Kind of kewl, I think - especially for first coins that I have ever sent to a TPG for grading. Guess the wait was worth it.

The average found per roll was 3 - with top amount being 6. In fact the very first roll that I opened contained the 6 - and it went down from there. There were several with 3 or 4, a few with only 1, and a few gooseggs, of course. The last one opened had a five.

I can't wait to see them myself - but not going to stress out over it. I need to put the Bison coins away for a few days, so that I can get back to my regular scheduled life, says hubby.
Just have so much to do - though not complaining - it has really been hectic. I will be glad to post photos once they come in.
I can't release all the info I have yet - but soon.

Do you know if PCGS will recognize the speared bison as a variety? Someone asked HRH that in the Q&A, and he said that was the first he heard of them!! Link

You should send one, or a scan of it, into CoinWorld for Collector's Corner. They highlight cool discoveries like that often.

Yes, been there - did that. It should be coming out in a couple of places within next 1-3 wks. They have taken their own photos, as have a few other folks. Bill Fivaz/Cherrypicker's Guide should have his coin 'for viewing' soon - so I am curious what he thinks about it too.

They are from the Denver mint.

Since this is not a "variety" coin (an intentional die change) then I would find it highly unlikely. Then again, they recognize the 3-Legged Buff don't they. I guess time will tell....

error is located on reverse - see photos at links below - if searching: be sure to hold coin sideways into light with Buffy's had facing your body . . . for quicker/easiest detection. It runs from E in stat'E's of America through Buff and almost 1/2 way down to the mount. Pretty long. All I know about PCGS is that I was told today that they will label it as an error of some sort - what they will call it remains to be seen. All D mint that I have heard so far.

Neat variety. This is the first I'd seen/heard of it. It looks to have been produced differently than the extra leaf quarters. Perhaps a feed mechanism on the press dragged something across the die.
