PayPal dilemma

I just received a PayPal payment for an eBay auction that gave me the choice of Accept or Deny. When I clicked Accept, I was told I had to upgrade my account to accept credit card orders, or else deny the payment. I denied the payment and contacted the winner stating the problem and said the winner could write me a check and I'd ship the coin immediately upon payment. There isn't much money involved, but I'd like to see the transaction go through. I'm not sure what's going on with this.

I guess they want you to upgrade so they can hit you for more fees.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

What I did was create a second account, which I would allow CC payments. The downside is you pay the % fee on anything that you accept.
I state in my auctions "Paypal accepted, but please contact me before paying with credit or debit cards." I have had a couple of people try to pay to my personal account (the default one listed in the auction). I simply denied their payments and sent them an email and invoice from the CC-accepting account. It created a little confusion, but was quickly resolved. It is against Paypal policy to charge the % fees to the buyer.
<< <i>From now on just put PayPal is OK only if from checking account. No Credit cards through Paypal are accepted. >>
That's what I'll have to do. Upgrading is always an option, of course, if I ever sell a coin over $500 on eBay, which is possible. Jeremy's suggestion of two accounts is interesting.
Luckily, the problem has been resolved with the winner. I'll have to be more careful in the future.
If you have a second bank account, get a second PP account. When I realized I needed to take CC's, but wanted to take personal payments without fees, I opened a second checking account, and a second PP account. The checking account is really a dummy account where money sits, waiting to get transfered to the account I use, but now I'm covered for all types of PP stuff.

<< <i>It is probably time to step up and upgrade your PayPal account...despite the fees. I did this several months ago and am glad I did so. I suspect the days of the personal account are limited anyway. >>
I agree ... I've gotten better "action" on my limited quantity of auctions since upgrading. I don't like having to pay a fee on every transaction, but the buyers seem to be more abundant since I upgraded.

If the days of personal accounts are limited, then I suspect my days of having a paypal account are just as limited.
I rarely ever sell but I am a regular buyer. I've never sold anything on eBay, but I have sold to people through email. I just explain that I can't accept CCs through paypal. It's never caused a problem yet.

<< <i>We're writing to let you know about an upcoming change to your PayPal Payment Receiving Preferences. You have selected the account preference blocking customer payments funded by a credit card when the sender has a bank account registered with PayPal. This preference will be discontinued sometime after February 11th, 2005.
Why is this preference being discontinued?
According to analysis and input from PayPal members, the preference creates a negative customer experience when a buyer's credit card payment is rejected when attempting to pay for an item displaying the PayPal and credit card logos. This can lead to buyers dropping out of the payment process or refusing to pay as a result of having their credit card payment blocked.
What impact will removal of this preference have on sellers?
Rest assured, you should not be inconvenienced or experience any noticeable changes to the way you receive payments. In fact, removal of this preference will likely reduce the potential for nonpayment, as some buyers become confused by the preference and fail to complete their transaction.
How are sellers protected by PayPal?
You can feel secure with PayPal's industry-leading fraud prevention tools that help protect sellers from chargebacks and loss due to fraud. If you receive a chargeback, PayPal will review that chargeback and may dispute it on your behalf, saving you the time and hassle of having to do it yourself. In addition, PayPal provides up to $5,000 USD in annual chargeback protection at no additional cost when you follow the Seller Protection Policy.
Thank you for your commitment to PayPal.
Sincerely,

<< <i>If you don't accept credit cards then DON'T use the PayPal logo in your listings and save yourself and the bidders a LOT OF GRIEF. Simply state in your description that you will accept PreyPal but only from existing balances or checking accounts. While I don't claim to be an expert, its amazing how little most PayPal users know about the versatility or lack thereof of their accounts. >>
If you read the thread, you will see that I have already upgraded my account to Premier so that I can take credit cards.

Yes Chuck I did note that but I posted the info for the benefit of those who still have personal accounts.
<< <i>Thanks, Jeremy. This presents a problem. I denied a legitimate payment, which I shouldn't have done. I didn't know there were limitations to the types of payments I can accept, and didn't state any such limitations in my auction. >>
I'm just amazed that you've posted over 54,000 times and never learned how PayPal works.

Because I only signed up a few weeks ago and just started selling on eBay. I was posting here instead of running auctions.
Having 2 Peepal accounts is strictly against Preypal policy. Read the terms. I called customer service abuse when I sent a payment to a wrong e-mail address and told them it was from THIS account - not THAT account and the guy went balistic.
He told me they would flag my accounts and watch for suspicious activity. So - I closed one.
